As you may have noticed, SERIAL PORTS will not be found on most, if not all PalmOne, HP and other PDAs. For that we are exploring CF/SD/BT/other serial comm devices.
I have had a Zaurus SL-5500 for a few years now and it has done everything great for me. In the last few months I even bought a Zaurus SL-6000L and it has performed beyond anything I could have hoped for. Now that these are not being sold in the USA anymore, I am lacking in advice for my friend who wants something that can pretty much do the same thing. Here is a list of features and what I use them for:
Serial connectivity to devices (APCs, managed switches, etc.)
Terminal window or command prompt (Pinging, traceroute, telnet, and displaying IP information.)
Compact flash slot for using a CF Ethernet NIC and CF WiFi card, or a handheld that has a WiFi and a Ethernet NIC built in.
A web browser for testing internet connectivity (something that can go to Google and search for potato)
A way to backup its configuration to some type of removable storage.
Some things I can live without but would be good to have:
Built in keyboard, some kind of remote connection software (pcAnywhere, VNC, etc,) and support for both Compact Flash and Secure Digital/Multi Media Cards.
Both of my Zaurus can do all that and more, but I can't buy them new anymore. Any suggestions of handhelds or even very small laptops would be most appreciated.
Cameras that make great holiday gifts
Let them start the new year with a step up in photo and video quality from a phone.
