A GOP survey, what is your choice?

Apr 24, 2006 1:32PM PDT

Dear James ,

You've heard from us. Now, we want to hear from you.

As we formulate our strategy to win in November, we need your opinion. Enclosed in this e-mail is your official Republican Grassroots Voices Survey. Please take a moment to share your opinion on...

The most important priority facing our nation... why it's important that we retain our Republican majorities in November... how you'd like to get involved online... where you get your news... and anything else - by sharing your thoughts at the end of the survey.

Please be sure to return the survey as soon as possible. We will be sharing your thoughts with our leaders in Congress for their action. Your answers will be used to formulate a blueprint for victory in 2006 and 2008.

Politics is changing - and new technology empowers you to connect with our Party's leaders and elected representatives at the click of a button. Take a moment to fill out this important survey and tell our Party's leaders what you think.

Sincerely,

Ken Mehlman
Chairman, Republican National Committee

P.S. With this survey, you'll have a chance to sign up for our Grassroots Voices Initiative. By signing up, you'll receive exclusive e-mail alerts about new online polls - and be the pulse of the Republican Party.

interesting survey...
Apr 24, 2006 1:47PM PDT

the beginning of it disturbed me however...

The most important priority facing our nation... why it's important that we retain our Republican majorities in November

The most pressing issue facing the nation is how to keep the Republicans in majority?

Not the war on terror?
Not Osama Bin Laden?
Not alternative energy sources, affordable health care, a baby boom generation that may soon be adding to the nations poverty level?

Interesting survey... even more interesting insight.

Didn't JFK say "ask not what your country can do for you... ask what you can do for your country?"

Republicans nor Democrats are looking out for the country. To them it's just a popularity contest. Sad

It so sad when people can't read...
Apr 24, 2006 9:02PM PDT

Clearly and obviously those were two items on a list of questions that the survey was asking. In no way was "the most pressing issue facing the nation is how to keep the Republicans in majority" indicated or implied.

Maybe consider not voting this time around? We need a literate and informed electorate.

As a literate and informed person...
Apr 25, 2006 3:15PM PDT

I am fully aware that all political organizations (including the Democrats) spend tens of thousands of dollars developing the specific wording for their publicity, solicitation and polling materials.

If anyone truly believes that the way this questionnaire was phrased was an innocent and sincere attempt to gather objective information then that person is naive. This letter, like most political circulars, is meant to develop a group mentality that reassures the recipient that they are one of the select... one of the good guys.

This wasn't a questionnaire... it was a reminder of every plank in the Republican platform.

If one is a staunch Republican then every one of these issues is equally important isn't it? You gotta love a test where there is no wrong answers Wink

Frankly if you want to argue that this was something more than a political cheer sheet then your wasting your breath with a rebuttal to me. Do us both a favor and don't bother.

BTW...The glib comments don't prove your point Ed... Oscar Wilde your not.

And Oscar Wilde YOU'RE not....

Just poking a little fun at your Emily Litella moment. You misread the original post. The proper response should have been, "Never mind."

I wasn't arguing anything else, your misdirection notwithstanding.

LOL... I didn't misread it...
Apr 25, 2006 10:35PM PDT

I saw through it. Both sides of the aisle are little more than advertising juggernauts. It's disingenuous to argue different.

Look... I can make my point without glib comments! Darn, I just made one didn't I Wink

This is what you wrote:

It's clear and obvious what you thought the survey meant and what you meant, and you were wrong. Or are you saying that you KNEW that those two items were unrelated but posted a bogus claim anyway?

Forget glib; focus on accurate.

if you don't see an association of thoughts by asking several questions in succession then you are missing a subtlety that political operatives - not to mention infomercials - employ every day.

To be fair the whole beginning reads...

I read into it a nuance that I perceived to be there... you say it's not. Good for you. I disagree and say that the implication is there. I see an association in the phrasing. When I worked with group dynamics in developing social cooperation skills in juvenal delinquents we called this technique ''planting the seed''.

- Important Priority -- Retain the Majority -- Get Involved -- Get your News -- and Anything Else.

You've read a lot of science fiction. I'm sure you've read George Orwell... This doesn't strike you as New Speak?

Maybe I'm too cynical but I see it and I bet if you talked to an advertising professional they would see it too. Maybe it's because I think and type using elipses. Maybe my tinfoil hat is on too tight. Maybe I'm just too literate. Grin
