General discussion

A funny thing happened on the way to the clinic ....

Mar 11, 2010 10:48AM PST

Tonight it was my turn to work at the local free clinic. A local organization has set up space with exam rooms and a free pharmacy. Local physicians rotate evenings working there. We usually see about 10 patients on the evenings the clinic is open.

When I drove up this evening there were 3 police cars parked in front. It seems that one of the scheduled patients arrived intoxicated and belligerent. The patient ended up at the local ER due to severe alcohol poisoning. The police were at the clinic to encourage/assist her to go to the ER.

I was not surprised when I learned a few minutes later that we had several no-show patients for the evening. I immediately knew why we had the no-shows, but it took the staff a little while to figure it out. Anybody care to guess why?

The no-show patients had warrants out on them?

The walk-in clinics in New Brunswick don't give prescriptions for Narcotics or Pain Killers.

Probably not ...

We do have some people in the clinic who have sketchy backgrounds but I doubt we have many fugitives.

One of the fairly rigid rules in the clinic is that we do not write for any controlled substances (narcotics, benzodiazepines, ...) so we don't have a lot of drug seekers.

Bingo!

Probably half of the patients we serve are illegal immigrants. Tonight was the first night in several years that I have not needed a translator.
