I also have a 700m and when i installed a usb card for wifi (not just vanilla 802.11 but the real deal) it too would only boot to safemode. Had to reload the whole os too even after all attempts to uninstall the drivers from safe mode on a 2 week old computer. My next attempt was with a pcmcia card and that did the trick. I think the usb bus drivers (lol) for this laptop are VERY finicky when it comes to porting over internet to the system. I would try a different wifi card with a different interface, check for vista drivers first.
I just purchased a new Dell with Windows Vista Home Premium preloaded. I also have a Dell Inspirion 700m laptop that is connected wirelessly to the internet through a Linksys Wireless-G Router (WRT54G). I was assured by an employee at Staples that the Linksys Compact Wireless-G USB Adapter (WUSB54GC) would allow me to connect my PC and Laptop wirelessly at the same time. Unfortunately, since I tried installing the compact USB adapter, I've had problems since. When I contacted the online support for Linksys, I was given a link to a driver for the 32-Bit Windows Vista and told it would solve the problem. Wrong. It got to the point where my computer would not Boot up at all. Windows would only run in Safe Mode. I would uninstall the Compact USB but for some reason the computer would still not run unless in Safe Mode. Finally, I was so frustrated I reloaded Windows Vista and I believe it works okay now, but I still want wireless internet! I have cable internet and the cable outlets throughout my apartment are so inconvinient that I currently have cables crossing through my bedroom doorway and all over the place. Can anyone help me?! I would greatly appreciate it. Also, any other tips about Windows Vista, what to do, what not to do, just so I won't screw up my computer again. Thank you!
