A decent optimizer ?

by David Anthony James / March 27, 2006 6:31 PM PST

I use Ashampoo WinOptimizer Platinum 3, but the Drive Cleaner will not clean "unnecessary files" it just informs that an error has occurred. Ashampoo support rarely bother reply to requests for help. Could anyone please recommend a similar product from a company that offers support and does not lose interest as soon as they have taken my money?
Thanks, Waggoner

Why bother?

Calling those programs "optimizers" is what I'd call false advertising. They don't really optimize anything. All they really do, is automate a number of tools already included with Windows. None of which optimize anything.

I wouldn't use those programs if they were free myself.

Thanks for your input. What perplexes me, is that after running the Windows cleaning tools Ashampoo Winoptimiser Platinum 3 still finds a lot of unnecessary files. The only way I am able to clear them is to use Winoptimiser Platinum Suit 2. Also would I be wise to clear the downloaded program files?
Would appreciate any advice.

Downloaded Program Files..

In reply to: Re: Optimiser

...are ActiveX components which are placed there by various programs such as Java, Windows Updates, Office UPdates, antivirus program updaters, etc. Although it won't "hurt" anything to remove all the files from inside the "Downloaded Program Files' folder, those items that are used frequently will simply need to be downloaded again. Generally, they are downloaded and installed automatically or with a prompt.

I tend to check the Properties" of each of those files, then delete those that I know will no longer be used, or those that are extremely old. I then leave the rest to perform the service they were designed for.

Hope this helps.

EasyCleaner

It's free and contains a registry cleaner, Unnecessary Files cleaner, Duplicate Files cleaner as well as other items. I use it occasionally.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Grif, Have downloaded EasyCleaner and it seems to be working fine. I am extremely annoyed that some of the large companies sell as hard as they are able, but don't offer reliable support.
