A DAY WITHOUT ILLEGAL ALIENS -- HOW ABOUT 365?

Apr 30, 2006 11:12PM PDT

Well .. here we go again. It's May 1st. May Day. A day which, ironically enough, was once a huge holiday in the Communist World. No ... it's not Lenin's birthday. In the U.S. we celebrate Lenin's birthday with something called "Earth Day." That in itself is rather strange, considering the fact that Earth Day has become somewhat of an anti-capitalist celebration. But, I digress. The Marching Mexicans will be at it again today ... they're filling the streets with the avowed attention to "close down" some major American cities.

First of all, boycotts, especially short ones like this, don't work. Why? If any immigrants do boycott anything, they're sure to go right back to it tomorrow. That's work/school/shopping being delayed, not denied. Second, this does have one convenient side effect. Perhaps just for one day...and maybe one day only...the 12 million criminal illegal aliens will go away for one day. We can dream, can't we?

Political correctness seems to be the order of the day in the media. I'm listening to CNN this morning as I prepare these program notes. Time after time I hear the word "immigrants." Only once thus far have I heard any derivative of the word "illegal" used in a story. The idiotic phrase "undocumented workers" comes up now and again. It seems that the last thing that the media wants to do is to call them what they are .... illegal aliens. By definition they are not "Immigrants." Immigration is a legal procedure which these people have not followed. They're aliens ... again, by definition ... and they're here illegally. That adds up to illegal aliens. While they're trying to close down some American cities why can't we just call them who and what they are?

Almost everything that can be said about the Mexican invasion force has already been said. There's really nothing new here, except for the fact that the illegal aliens and those who support them will be on the streets again today. Though the basic facts remain the same, there are a few things that are changing out there. First, with every demonstration, and the continued inaction on the part of the Bush Administration and the Congress, the illegal alien lobby becomes stronger and bolder. Second, average Americans, those who don't derive their power through the ballot box or gain financial advantage by using illegal alien labor, are getting a bit fed up with this whole "day without immigrants" BS.

As I said .. the facts here haven't changed. Only the boldness and arrogance of those who have violated our laws, and those who support them, has changed .... for the worse.

Last week I posted a review of some facts about the Mexican invasion you may not have been aware of, or may have missed. Those facts are just as valid and meaningful today as they were last week. So ... I'll post them again, revised and expanded:

Since 1990 an estimated 25 million Latinos have crossed the Mexican - American border .... northbound. The reason you keep hearing the 11 million figure is because the other 13 to 14 million were given amnesty during the mid-1990s. By any measure this is an invasion. No ... they aren't carrying guns with them, but they are carrying another weapon that may be just as effective; their willingness to exploit our compassion. They will eventually use our compassion (misplaced, in this case) and our surrender to the gods of political correctness to achieve their goals.

i hope you bother to read it and think.

If we get rid of the illegals
Apr 30, 2006 11:32PM PDT

Many of those jobs....
May 3, 2006 2:43AM PDT

....are ''off the books'' jobs that pay below minimum wage. Day work, sweatshops, that kind of thing. You can't convert welfare recipients to those jobs because they don't technically exist, even though everybody knows they do.

This isn't just about illegals; it's also about the people who employ and exploit them.

I understand that
May 3, 2006 10:05PM PDT

You are saying that wages are being depressed but I'm also paying more in taxes because these jobs don't pay taxes. The jobs might have to come out of the shadows.

As to not knowing these jobs exist, people know they exist because they see them being done. They just don't necessarily know that they are off the books.

It's a double-edged sword all right
May 3, 2006 11:08PM PDT

If you bring those jobs out of the shadows, the cost of the goods/services involved with those jobs will go up to match the higher labor costs, which could cause an inflationary ripple effect.

I don't know what the answer is. I do think that illegals who want to become legal residents should be given the opportunity to apply without having to fear deportation just for walking into the immigration office.

My grandmother was illegal
May 4, 2006 1:43AM PDT

She came over once, was sent back (I forget why), then came over a second time. When it looked like she might not be allowed in, she jumped ship. Of course this was around 1912.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that many people who entered this country illegally have since become productive members of society and have raised families here. I think they deserve a chance to become legal residents, even citizens if they want to.

Is that wrong?

is it ok to rob a bank?

When you have 12 million undocumented people in the county..
May 4, 2006 3:24AM PDT

with more coming every day, you can't just be blase about it. There needs to be a solution. And letting people "jump the line" is not fair. There are people from other countries who have been waiting a long time.

Throughout history there have been "invasions" of this type. More often or not the unwitting "host" country has ended up subjugated. Uusually the result was NOT good.

- Collapse -
How would you feel if your grandmother waited to
May 4, 2006 10:25PM PDT

come in the "right" way and a number of her friends came in the way she did?

Did she become a citizen? If so, how did she do it with no documentation?

Should we open our borders to all and sundry until there's no more room for anyone? The whole country looks like NYC?

People talk about prices increasing if the illegals are no longer doing the work. The wages will increase and the number of people working will increase along with taxes and social security income. It will cause a decrease in unemployment payments as well as welfare.

Hopefully it will be a wash.

There are worse things....
May 4, 2006 11:08PM PDT

....than the whole country looking like NYC. A lot of the country would benefit (IMO) from a little diversity. I don't think we should just open the floodgates. I'm just saying that the people who have already been here for some time and have made respectable lives for themselves and their families should be given the opportunity to become legal residents. Speaking of NYC, there's a statue in the harbor there with an inscription on it about the tired, the poor.....

That's a good question about whether my grandmother became a citizen. I believe she did but I'll have to ask my mother. Times were different then and it may have been easier to do it without documentation of legal residence.

Your statement

your so easy to overlook the law when its convient to you.

There are more laws than laws about immigrants. If it's convenient to overlook one law, why isn't it convenient to overlook all laws?

You don't mind overlooking laws about "possessing" snakes but object to overlooking laws about immigrants.

I appears you use laws when convenient (to you)

Wife talked about ancestors to her father
May 5, 2006 3:43AM PDT

before he passed away. He didn't know much, said all his father told him was that his father's grandfather said his father swam "the river" and settled in Tennessee. No hispanic blood/relationship, but some American Native Indian intermingled, so maybe he swam the Mississippi or the Saint Lawrence river and became a undocumented US citizen.

The problem there ...
May 5, 2006 12:40AM PDT

... is allowing law breakers to skip to the front of the line ahead of law abiders. Never a good idea.

Other way around
May 1, 2006 6:21AM PDT

get rid of welfare and all the other social programs (or limit them to citizens) and deny them employment, then they'll leave of their own free will.
The two reasons that these illegal aliens cross the border for are the opportunity for wages above what they'd earn in Mexico, and guaranteed support from the US government.

Speaking of welfare.......
May 1, 2006 9:49AM PDT

Last week my wife went on a afternoon doctors appointment at a hospital and while there started having sharp pains in her right side. They wheeled her to the emergency room for evaluation as a possible appendix attack. They called me at home to come. At about 11:00 that night I was outside having a forbidden cigarette in a smoking zone sitting on a lamp post base when I noticed a white lady in her 60's coming out of the emergency room on a 3 wheel battery type chair. She pulled up to the back of her vehicle, a SUV with a rear raise up hinged type door, and began unloading stuff from her wheelchair. Now, I have seen many type vehicles with power assist for wheelchairs, but this one didn't have such a luxury. After unloading, she hesitated, took a good gander around, then to my surprise she bent over and lifted the whole 3 wheel vehicle into the back of her SUV. I'm thinking, good grief, that must weigh at least 100 pounds. I don't think I could lift it in my younger days. Wondering what kind of disability she has. Perhaps she just needs it to replace walking and looked around to see if there was anyone else to help her lift.

The wife is ok for now. They did a CAT scan and said she had a cyst on one of her overies(sp?), but that should have not caused the pain. Sent her home as unknown for the pain, but to come back if ........

The whites were the second race to step foot on the United States of America. How can we allow full rights to illegal Alians. With the 11 million illegal Alians Boycotting today. I whouldn't give them rights. Stop! The BoyCotting so our government can think without the distractions of the May Day BoyCott.

Good point, and pretty much the same as mine. These companies are taking advantage of this type of distressed laborer, and also at the expense of American citizens who don't want the company to treat them in the same manner. It's understandable the illegals are coming here if even with the downside of less than a citizen deserves to expect they can make a better living than back in Mexico. The biggest problem encouraging illegal immigration are these type of "cheap---" employers! I do want to see the government go stronger after the companies involved in this illegal use of foreign labor.
