A & D drive suddenly won't work

I am using Windows XP-sp2- home Ed.- First of 07 all my computers in the house got error message "Application failed to initialize: 0.800106ba.A problem caused windows defender service to stop. To start the service, restart your computer or search help and support on how to start a service manually." That message froze the computers in our household and would not allow any access. I then discovered that drive a & d were also affected. Can anyone please help me, and i'm not very smart. Thanks for any help you can give me, Sharon

I understand that many get upset when their machines get unruly. Hope any clues you find here are useful.
