General discussion

a coupla questions : notifications & speed

Aug 8, 2006 6:42AM PDT

Hey, I've been with the forums for a long while now, and you all have usually been pretty good about helping me with my questions. I've been meaning to ask this for a long time now, but:

Is there any way of getting immediate notification of replies to message threads, instead of just whenever cnet decides to send 'em? Other forums have options such as daily digest, immediate, or none, but here, it seems it defaults on none unless I click "track this discussion," and then it sends them to me with two or three replies already made. It works, just seems slow.

Speaking of slow, this forum is the slowest site I visit. Okay, maybe not the very slowest, but it's down there... myspace, newegg, google, lots of other sites load fairly quickly compared to this site. I realize I'm on dialup, but it seems it's just SO slow compared to the others. First, it loads the yellow background and right sidebar, then hangs out for a little bit, then pretty much drops the whole page on me. It's as if it tries to load the whole page before displaying it, which is pretty much annoying on dialup, especially considering I often don't need to see the whole page.

Thanks again for all the help you've provided in the past...

It will get better...

Cnet is currently preparing for a major overhaul of the forums, starting with the movement of these forums to a set of new servers next month. Once the changeover occurs you should see a heft increase in performance. I don't know if that will have any effect on the e-mail notifications (which I must admit are horribly slow at arriving), but one can hope.

There is supposed to be a short beta test before it goes live so hopefully the bugs will be worked out ahead of time, minimizing the downtime. Of course if it all goes wrong I'm more than happy to be the scape goat. Happy

Question for you, John ....
Aug 9, 2006 9:58AM PDT

Do you know if forums will be "wiped clean" when this major overhaul happens, or will the threads/posts that are here remain available?

Thanks,

Here to stay...

Hi Marcia,

The forums may be unaccessible for a short period during the migration but once the dust settles you should find all of the old posts/threads right where we left them...to my knowledge the database will simply be moved from one server to another while the forum software will (thankfully) be left behind in favor of a newer edition. I just hope it will go as smoothly as planned.
