Phelps Gets Five Golds, Then Steps Aside

Michael Phelps doesn't mind making history while sitting in the stands. The man who dominated the attention at the Olympic pool gave up a coveted spot on the 400-meter medley relay team to Ian Crocker.

Phelps equaled Mark Spitz's record of four individual swimming gold medals Friday night by holding off Crocker in a thrilling finish of the 100-meter butterfly.

1. Since he swam in the preliminaries and semifinals, Phelps will still be awarded a gold medal should the Americans (as expected) win.

2. That said, the gesture is still noteworthy, as one can convincingly argue that Ian Crocker, by swimming the finals of the 4X100 freestyle relay while sick (and doing poorly as a result), cost Michael Phelpshis 7th gold medal - and $1,000,000, which the Speedo swimwear folks would have awarded Phelps had he tied Mark Spitz' record of 7 golds.

It should be noted that Phelps' 4 golds in individual events tied the Olympic record held by Spitz.
