General discussion

a Adobe McAfee nightmare!

Jul 26, 2011 3:40AM PDT

Went to download Adobe FLash but for some reason Adobe X is downloaded instead. To make matters worse McAfee goes into this enhanced protection mode. Now all my computer does is shuts off and and on. I cannot even get McAfee to do a scan. I called McAfee and they seemed to be clueless. I am using a Dell XP . Anybody have any ideas.

Tried Starting In Safe Mode, Then Use System Restore?
Jul 26, 2011 6:34AM PDT
How To Start In 'Safe Mode'

Once you've started in Safe Mode and used System Restore back to a time when things were good, then I'll suggest it's a malware problem.. If you haven't already, download, install, update, then run full system scans with BOTH of the free tools below:

Malwarebytes Antimalware

SUPERAntispyware Removal Tool

Hope this helps.

Here is the problems. I can't even hook up to the internet!. I get blocked from going online, even in the safe mode. I already have the program you mentioned but I cannot use it for above reason. I never seen anything like this.

You Don't Need The Internet To Run System Restore
Jul 26, 2011 9:55AM PDT

Did you do that? If not, please do..

Afterward, if you've already got Malwarebytes or SuperAntispyware, simply run them without accessing the internet.. Or download the updates on a separate computer, transfer the update file to a flash drive, then move the update to the problem machine and run the update.. Below are links to the installer files for both programs as well as the standalone update installer which can be run after the program is installed. Run full system scans with both tools.

nothing is working and new problem
Jul 27, 2011 3:47AM PDT

I want to tell you thank you. I am having a had time posting here for some reason. We have those programs and nothing would work. Nothing. All the computer would show that MacAfee was in the enhanced mode. THe computer would not even stay on in the safe mode for more then 30 seconds. We were on the phone with MacAfee for 4 hours. All we wanted is to get that program off the computer. It was like pulling teeth. We had to go to the registry and deleate anything with the word McAfffe in it. Well one of those things was a dll file which kept us from opening windows. Mcafee was on the phone all of the time.. We tell the man what just happened and tells us to call Dell!. It was not Dells program it was their program not Dell. Dell is going to make you pay anytime you talk to them. I am really at wits endsnw so I decided just to get rid of everything re load the OS. I did this before a few months ago because of the blue screen of death. So there was hardly anything on the computer. Now here is the problem I downloaded WIndows XP but now it is telling me it cannot restart in the safe Mode. Well I never loaded in the the safe mode. My question is how to get it to load in the normal mode. this incident has managed exasperate my Asthma, soIhad to take a break But I need to get this computer working and I am outraged that McAfee has a program that will lock you down like that. We were just downloading Adobe Flash.

So Now It's Different Problem?
Jul 27, 2011 4:20AM PDT

In your post above, you said; "Now here is the problem I downloaded WIndows XP but now it is telling me it cannot restart in the safe Mode." I doubt if you actually "downloaded" Windows XP.. Do you mean you decided to perform a clean install of the computer so "INSTALLED" XP and after performing a reformat and reinstall of XP, now it won't start in Safe Mode? If that's the case, HOW did you install XP? Did you use s Dell Recovery disc? If so, after installing XP from the operating system disc you MUST also reinstall all the hardware drivers using their Resource Driver disc.. Did you do that?

Hope this helps and please clarify with a little more information.

Cnanot get out of Safe mode
Jul 27, 2011 7:22AM PDT

Yes i used the Dell XP disc that came with the computer. After I did that the computer stated it cannot restart in Safe Mode. Why would it state that? I want it to start in the normal made but it keeps on putting me back to the safe mode. And no I did not install the drivers yet. Should I do that to get me out of the safe mode. I thought windows was going to start right up like it did when I did it before and then I installed the drivers. Now I can't get it out of the safe mode.

Why Would It Do That? Lack of Drivers & Other Causes
Jul 27, 2011 7:45AM PDT

Of course, you may have to start from scratch again if the drivers won't install from Safe Mode, which is possible. Some of the drivers will install from Safe Mode, some may not.. Give them a try and see if it gets the job done.

If you can't boot to normal Windows, you may need to format the drive and reinstall Windows again using the Dell Windows CD. Once you can access normal Windows, then install the drivers from the Resource Driver CD.

Hope this helps.

Cannot get oot of safe more
Jul 27, 2011 9:15AM PDT

I installed the windows OP and it is telling me it cannot install from safe mode, after I looked like it installed. After I did that windows would not start because for some reason I cannot get it out of the safe more. What does that mean? A pop up states after it looks like installed windows "Windows XP cannot run under safe mode. Setup will restart now" But it keeps on going back into the safe mode. Then I get a black screen stating safe mode How can I got out of that. THanks again for all of your time and help.

You Installed Windows Wrong??
Jul 27, 2011 12:56PM PDT

To install Windows XP, follow all of the steps in the link below...Remembering that you must BOOT from the XP installation disc.. You can't run it from within either "normal" or Safe Mode Windows. Place the disc in the disc drive, then restart the computer. As long as the CMOS settings have you boot order so the CD boots first, you're off and running:

thanks for link...
Jul 27, 2011 3:40PM PDT

In the end I had to reformat the drive and reinstall the XP. Now is there anyway to get that Enhanced Protection Mode out of McAfee. I have it too and I need to find out how to get it out before it happens to me. I want to thank you for that link and all of your help. I feel like I am punch drunk now.
