98 to 98se

Anyone know where I can buy a
98 to 98SE upgrade CD?

I got one a few years ogo for someone but can't find any now.

It's on an older machine with 96 megs of ram and it is a one program computer, it just needs SE for the updated software it runs.
Thanks

Really, I do not know but I've stuck with Win98FE all along and not worried about whether a software package said such, and only once were there problems with a CD-RW package which the company immediately sent a version which worked.

This software refuses to install saying it needs
98SE and FE is currently installed.

I would switch it to XP if I thought the BIOS would handle it. But it needs more ram as well.

I ran across this on another forum:

"A trick we used in the shop when I used to work as a tech to upgrade 98 with 98SE OEM was to simply go to your Windows dir and delete win.com. Then, install Windows 98SE in the same directory that 98 is installed. Since win.com is gone, it won't complain about being an upgrade and it will still use the existing registry and program files so you won't have to re-install a thing. I must warn you, this generally worked 9 times out of 10, but there was a rare few times when I ended up with a corrupt install so use this trick at your own risk."

Has anyone tried this?

I'll copy the entire drive before doing it, I just don't want to waste 2 hours finding out it won't install, because it's not an upgrade.

Trick works.

You can type into Google "Delete win.com" and find discussions.

I wonder what software is so picky?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Version is interesting.

On my Windows 98se the value for ...

Version "Windows 98"
VersionNumber "4.10.2222"

Maybe?

Nope -- not with this CD.

1. Changed the registry from 1998 to 2222.

2. Rebooted the system and placed the CD in the drive which offered to install Roxio version 6 but when prompting it to do so, the error was displayed still:

This version of Easy CD & DVD Creator 6 is not supported on Microsoft Windows 98 Golden Operating System.

3. Even after exiting me out and rebooting the system again, there were a few files and folders left over in the version 5 location in Program Files, which I moved out to the Temp folder and so far, there doesn't seem to be a problem with the former install -- time will tell whether anything got really screwed which may require an uninstall/reinstall.

We tried.

I see many software packages these days that say they won't run on FE but require SE.

I believe this is a Mitchell Auto Mechanic Professional program. Something used at an auto repair shop. They have one PC with 98FE on it still.

If I can find it, I can unload it for $15.
