Resolved Question

840 EVO on Zbox ID92

Aug 13, 2014 6:13AM PDT

Hi,

I installed a Samsung SSD 2.5", 120GB, SATA600, 840 EVO into my new Zotac ZBX ID92, with the purpose of installing Windows 8 on it (from USB drive). It just won't do it, is the thing.

After the first reboot, when Windows already installed several files, the Zbox says there's no bootable device upon reboot. Or it will tell me Windows cannot be installed on Partiton 0, 2 (where it just installed it), because my hardware may not support booting from that disk (which is ludicrous, of course; but, indeed, it won't boot from it).

I found a German site that describes my exact issue too:

http://www.hifi-forum.de/viewthread-256-114.html

Seems I need to do a firmware upgrade first, but the ISO on the Samsung site does not make for a bootable USB. Sigh.

Anyone know of this issue, and how ro solve it?

Thanks

I ran that through Google Translate

And there appears to be more tweaks to this to get it to work including, well, I'll not duplicate the discussion but time to call Zotac and ask them why what they noted doesn't work. That is, it's their PC and BIOS.

Timing issue is still with Samsung EVO
Aug 13, 2014 7:26AM PDT

Well, there is a 'solution', but it requires slowing down the Sata Controller speed to 'Gen2' (whatever that means).

And yes, it's Zotac's Zbox, of course; but it's the Samsung EVO that has the timing issue. Happy

Then let's take that and run.

This SSD is therefore incompatible.

Running, but at half-speed
Aug 13, 2014 7:38AM PDT

It's running on SATA2 speed now. Not finding that a real acceptable solution, though.

I could try and run a firmware upgrade for it, but reports say these often fail on the EVO; so I don't want to brick my disk, either.

Anyone know how to boot Samsung firmware ISO image from USB to begin with?

Did you read this from Toms?
Aug 13, 2014 7:45AM PDT

"Our real-world metrics demonstrate that those theoretical differences aren't always practical, though. In most cases, a SATA 3Gb/s-attached Samsung 840 Pro is almost as fast as the same drive connected to a 6 Gb/s link."
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ssd-upgrade-sata-3gbps,3469-16.html

It also writes "Almost No Advantages for SATA 6 Gb/s On A Typical Desktop

The 840 Pro soared in our synthetic tests when we had it hooked up to a 6 Gb/s port. It also fell flat several times when we hamstrung it using SATA 3Gb/s. When we specifically targeted sequential reads and writes, along with random I/O at high queue depths, the differences were especially pronounced. But once we started through our handful of real-world tasks, booting up and shutting down Windows 8, and loading a number of applications, the differences shrank to almost nothing. The deltas we did measure wouldn't be perceptible during your day-to-day grind."

As such, only the very new to computers will flame on about this area. Most will accept that it's a fine step up from spinning rust.

Thanks

Thank you. I guess I'll just take my (minor) loss, and be happy the thing boots at least.

N.B. Not sure how to mark your reply as 'answered,' but just consider my question answered with it. Happy

Thanks again.

I see you read that and understood.

About the forum. It's kind of a mismosh of features and odd things. But you should be seeing a big step up in speed from the rust farm. There are some that won't take anyone's word about the SATA 2 laptop area. They'll scream forever. Can't say I blame them but the benchmarks speak volumes to me. I'll take that anyday for an upgrade.

Sata2 speed
Aug 13, 2014 7:33AM PDT

P.S. If Gen2 stands for SATA2 speed, then it is all the more unacceptable even. 840 EVO is a SATA 600 disk: it should be able to connect at SATA3 speeds.

You hear that a lot. I'm unsure if you heard all the screams over the years about SATA speed reduction on many many machines. I can't tell if you are new to all this, but if so, I hear you.

Yup, first (and last?)

Yeah, LOL, this is my first SSD. Happy I had thought SSD had matured enough over the years. I guess not.
