56k modem only connecting at 28K

Jul 15, 2005 10:23AM PDT

Greetings all, I have a DELL Latitude running windows XP with Intel pentium II, 266 mgz, 128 mb ram, and an xircom ethernet 100 + modem 56. My problem is I cannot connect at 49 speed that my other computer connects at using the same isp and phone line. I have gone into control panel - modems and set the connect speed to the highest setting (well above 56), anyone have any ideas?
Thanks in advance for any help,
..John

They get that call all the time and will have ready answers.

2. Change to an full external hardware modem. I find most do better.

And. . .

The speed you changed is the internal buss speed between the modem and the processor. Set it at 115200 and leave it as it has no effect on connect speed.

What Bob said is good as all modems are not created equal.

For a small explaination on dial-up connect speeds, visit my site below.
