A lot depends on how the program/movie was mixed in post as some mixing for surround is better than others. Sometimes, the kind of audio the original had will affect how you hear audio. In other words, some original movies were in mono, so the post production company sometimes does a little trickery to attempt a 5.1 mix. Or, nothing is done. Some are stereo sources, so you essentially end up with the equivalent to Pro Logic instead of a true 5.1.
As far as all of the versions of surround, my understanding is that 5.1 uses two rear corner speakers, 6.1 adds and extra rear speaker (centered between the two rear corner speakers), and 7.1 adds two additional speakers, one for each side-wall between the front corner speaker and the rear corner speaker. The 7.1 in theory, replicates how some of the higher-end theaters have their speakers set up.
I understand that on a 7.1 system the back speakers are a matrix of the main and souround channels? The reason I ask is sometimes I watch a program thats in 5.1. and only the front 3 speakers come on, other times I will hear all 5 speakers and no rear, And my blockbustor movies like Star Wars return of the sith the rear speakers fill in perfectly EXAMPLE a jet plane comes at you the sound will start in front and move to the sourounds and then exit from the rear channels So to me the sound seems to be descrete 7.1 and yet I know it isn't. Or could it be the amp does some tricks ? In closingI know sometimes I make stupid jokes and my spelling is horrible, but give old me a break HELP I'am 68 years old and just trying to keep up with you young puppies have a nice weekend stewart
