Resolved Question

5.1 Surround from TV to AMP??

Dec 24, 2011 1:10PM PST

I have a Samsung 6420 LED. It has an Optical audio out. In the manual it states that if you connect a Blue Ray or Player via HDMI, it will not send 5.1 through the Optical out to my 5.1 amp. It appears that this connection is little use. Perhaps just for broadcast tv.

My Question:
If I play a movie from a usb connected hard drive with the tv's internal media player, will I hear the surround sound when the amp is connected via the tv's optical out?

If not, what use is the internal media player?

The Samsung support line was not knowledgeable enough to know this.

Should NEVER work. Why?

One of the mandates of HDCP (which is in HDMI) and more is that any HD signal or audio that reaches a device that can render sound or video must only pass through Stereo or for video, SD.

There is one and only one exception to this rule and that is for OTA (over the air.)

Nothing busted. Just a rule you may not have heard of.

Using External Media Player Best then??
Dec 25, 2011 4:06AM PST

So am I right then that the TV's internal media player, Netflix, etc, can't be heard in surround with the home theatre amp?? That's too bad if this is the case.

I do have a Western Digital HD Live media player that can be connected to the TV with HDMI and to the home theatre amp with an optical cable. Is that the preffered choice for AC3 encoded files?

Netflix may be just like OTA.

Since there is a similarity between those two it may be possible. But all that would be up to Netflix and their app. This would not be something Samsung should know much about.

The preferred choice upsets folk. YOU have to find what works. But let me comment about the setup you noted. I read folk complain about lipsync a lot with that setup. At least you can fix that later by editing the content.
