Question

4k video at 120hz pass through 4k video a60hz

Mar 11, 2017 11:58AM PST

Can 4k video at 120hz pass through 4k video only 60hz? My receiver has hdmi 4k at 60 hz pass through but the source connected to it through hdmi is 4k at 120hz , same like the tv. Is just the quality of video going lower when reaching the tv or the video will not pass at all?

Clarification Request
I've yet to find any 4K 120Hz sources.

I do however find folk that have 120Hz screens asking similar questions. But it's all a big misunderstanding. The screen is 120, the input is 60 or for old HDMI 1.x inputs, 30.

future proof 4k receiver
Mar 11, 2017 1:30PM PST

I want to buy a future proof receiver. I found \this DENON receiver has it all but only 60hz on the 4k hdmi imputs. Soon there will be plenty of 4k 120hz sources and I want to know if the video of that source will pass through the 4k at only 60hz of the receiver towards the tv ( the tv is 4k at 120hz). The video will pass through but reduced to 60hz or will not pass at all? Thanks!

This will be the first 4K with 120Hz input I've seen.

So far, all 4K is only 60Hz. I fear you are talking about the panel rate and not video input rates.

That is not correct (yet) regarding futureproofing

The sources are still 60Hz for the near term. I don't see HFR coming just yet, only in the specs of ATSC 3, etc. The newer 4K HDTVs will simply get better and better at displaying the content (especially motion), but most of that content still won't be 120Hz. You don't have to worry about it for now.
