480p looks worse than 480i on an EDTV?

Mar 27, 2006 3:03PM PST

Hey there -

So my sister just bought a flat screen EDTV; she bought the floor model at the store and got a significant discount. She had hooked up her Panasonic progressive scan DVD player through the composite input on the TV, but a component input was also available. So I went and bought one of those overpriced Monster Component cables and hooked up the component video out on the DVD straight to the component video in on the TV. We noticed the difference in the video quality immediately, but not for the better. In fact, the progressive video, though you could tell there was more range in color and light, was filled with a lot of pixelly static. Even the black space at the top and bottom of the frame were filled with little pixels of light. You can switch it back to interlaced mode on the DVD player itself - I did that and it looked a lot better; the range in color went away, but so did the 'noise'. Anyone know what's up with this? Isn't progressive 480 suppose to look better than interlaced, even on just an EDTV?

Any advice appreciated.

I cannot help you with your problems, But you just bought a turkey. Lets put it this way I just saw an ad at Frys for a 46" d.l.p. t.v. for $975 You can buy real hi-def t.vs for as low as $600 Your e.d.t.v. is only slightly better than an anolog set. So please take it back and let them find a sucker to buy it only joking good luck and tell us your outcome

If you're just "joking" I'd hate to see what you say when your serious. Poor EDTV owner probably just jumped off of a tall building while holding his EDTV because of your comments. Ouch.

Well, Stew is correct EDTV is DEAD.
You didn't give any info on the EDTV, LCD, Plasma, make model # ?????
The difference between 480p and 480i is very slight, only
detecible on fast moving images.
I have an older JVC DVD player interlaced only and new progressive DVD player, It is very hard to tell the difference if at all!!!!
The Panasonic DVD player may not do a good job on progressive or the TV may not handle the progressice signal very well?????
I do agree that getting a real HDTV is a better idea. John

Never take a chance on buying a flat screen tv that is a floor model. The main reason why is because you don't know how long that tv has been on and what kind of treatment it has undergone. I would not even buy a dlp set or rptv either. The only kind of display model I would buy would be a tube tv.

Please don't think that I'm bashing your purchase, as I'm sure your sister thought it was a good deal and the tv looked pretty cool. Before you think about taking it back, try a better dvd player (one with upconversion and an hdmi port) and see how it does when plugged into the component input of the flat screen. Also, if the tv has a dvi or hdmi input, try using those instead.
