42" Plasma with problems

Dec 19, 2005 1:48AM PST

I also have a problem with my 18 month old 42" Gateway plasma.
I have a 3/4" vertical black band on the screen. I spoke with Gateway CS this AM. Boy do they suck! Was told of the $1200 charge on my credit card to have someone come and repair the TV. I also asked how I could order the parts on my own and do my own repair. The incompetents said I should have had the extended warranty and couldn't / wouldn't give me a method of buying the parts.
I repair hi-tech biomedical equipment for a living....changing a board or two isn't a big chore.
I would greatly appreciate anyone advising where the replacement parts can be found.

Probably proprietary. . .

Board or component? Have you diagnosed it? Do you have the equipment? If you repair high tech equipment you should know their reasons. I'm afraid you're SOL unless you want to carry it in somewhere.

partsearch?

there are a lot of partsearch websites on there that will get you the parts you need. i'm pretty sure sampo makes gateway plasma's and sampo plasma's are definitely not a good "brand name" plasma. also, you have no way of figuring out exactly which part on your tv is going bad. you might be able to guess, but there is a chance one part is causing another part to break which causes another part to break. aka on a computer..the power source sucks, causing the fans to stop working causing your cpu to overheat causing your motherboard to break. you'll have computer programs that can tell you that on a computer, but most likely, you wont have one for a plasma laying around.
