$400 Cameras with 10x Optical Zoom? Kodak?

Dec 12, 2004 11:39PM PST

We are replacing a Canon PowerShot S100. My husband is determined to get a camera with 10x optical zoom. We are looking at the Kodak Easy Share DX7590. What else is out there in that price range (400-450) with a 10x optical zoom. How important is such a high optical zoom. We use the camera for snapshots of our kids. My husband wants the zoom because we can never get a good shot of them in their various school productions from our seats. Is that a good enough reason to be so set on 10x optical? What other good cameras are out there for our purposes? THANKS!

I have the dx6490 and it's very nice. The model you noted is good too.

I have had a 2 of the 10x optical zoom Kodak cameras. I had the 6490 and the 7590. I had the 6490 for about 6 months and the 7590 for 3 months.

For outdoor photography they are generally very good as long as you have good lighting conditions. The zoom works very good in outdoor lighting conditions.

Indoor situations is a different story. Even using manual settings I would still have problems with lighting and some fuzziness would occur. I ended up having to shoot pictures multiple times.

I think some of these problems could have been eliminated if I used an external flash, but I did not want to invest in one. Also, the zoom is hard to keep still, it is best to use a tripod when zooming up to 10X.

A couple of features this camera really could use is an AF-Assist Lamp and Image-Stabilization.
