40% of Firms Vulnerable to Cyber Attacks - South Korea

Nov 20, 2003 1:16AM PST

More than 40 percent of South Korean companies are still highly vulnerable to potential cyber attacks, a government survey found on Thursday.

The survey, based on annual training against mock online attacks at 110 major companies, showed 43.6 percent have been affected by hackers, with most of the surveyed knowing little about computer security.

"The study shows an alarming level of carelessness and ignorance about security at private companies," said Ministry of Information and Communication official Hwang Chul-joong.

Of those surveyed, only 36 percent said they have special teams to cope with online attacks.
