4 questions about the Zune

Mar 5, 2008 6:15AM PST

I'm looking into buying a Zune 80, and I need a Zune 80 owners' knowledge to answer the following questions:

1. What problems are there with music formats?

2. If there are problems, can I fix them by changing the music format?

3. Can I put recorded, re- writable DVDs into my computer, and put the shows onto the Zune? (Yes, I have Vista)

4. If the answer to question 3 is no, can giving the DVD recorded shows a new format help?

Get zune 80!

Here are honest answers of a true zune 80 owner!

1. What problems are there with music formats? I use the zune pass of $14.99/month from the zune marketplace so i have no issues with formats.

2. If there are problems, can I fix them by changing the music format? I suppose...

3. Can I put recorded, re- writable DVDs into my computer, and put the shows onto the Zune? (Yes, I have Vista) YES(to both questions)! I rip dvd's from magic dvd ripper and i have strangeland on a burned dvd and it ripped with no issues and looks great. I also use media center with vista to record tv shows like Chuck and House on my zune!

4. If the answer to question 3 is no, can giving the DVD recorded shows a new format help?

Hope all this helps! Get a zune 80! You WILL be satisfied!

Some extra answers to those questions

1. The Zune doesn't support protected WMA (used by Wal-Mart and a number of other stores) as well as some specialized but somewhat common formats like Apple Lossless (surprise), FLAC, and OGG.

2. You can convert files in third-party utilities, but that usually deteriorates quality slightly.

3. If the videos are in a native DVD format (i.e. they work as normal movie DVDs would in a stand-alone player), you'll need to convert them with a third-party utility. That's true of just about every portable media player and software, though.

4. Yes (see above). I'd recommend a tool like Videora. Even if you have to use an "iPod" preset, the resulting conversion will usually work with the Zune once you import it into the Zune software.
