3G Mobile Hotspot vs Fio

by Marlena0312 / March 1, 2011 3:05 AM PST

Hi All:
I'm not super technologically savvy so forgive me if I use language a 5th grader could understand in this. Happy

I just got an LG Vortex with 3G Mobile Hotspot. I was considering cancelling my home Wifi through Verizon Fios in favor of using the 3G hotspot. I was thinking of this for money. The Hotspot is $20 a month vs $65 a month for Fios (25 Mbps). Does anyone know if that would be a good idea? Or what would be bad about it? We only have 1 home laptop. I do connect to work via VPN but that's about the only "major" thing we do on it. Otherwise it's email, FB, etc. We don't even stream videos or play games.

I guess I'm wondering if anyone would know how the speed is. Also if there are any hidden costs. Like, if you go over your cell phone minutes, you're charged. Would this be the same thing?

Thoughts? Thanks!

I have a friend who

uses his phone's WiFi, but he mostly uses 4G, which gets him unlimited data transfer. 3G is limited to 5GB per month.

With 3G he gets about 1.15mb/s down, so it's significantly slower than a standard Internet connection.

Every time I have used my 3G its fairly slow, compared to my home WiFi.

Verizon is talking about changing its pricing plan, to what is yet to be seen.

The choice would be yours however as Sovereign said the speed of the 3G hotspot is significantly slower then a basic home internet connection.

a speed test on 4G, and he gets about 3mb/s down, which is fairly reasonable.

No wifi hot spot but tethered and no limit on data is very nice.
