3d games crash to deskto in XP after hardware upgrade

Nov 16, 2003 11:53AM PST

3d games (or anything using 3d) crashes to the desktop. I've upgraded to the latest via drivers and latest drivers for my video card. Problem started when I upgraded my mb, processor and memory. I have tried a clean install of windows xp with a Jaton 4x geforce ti4200 and an asus radeon 9600 se (both 128 megs of ram). I have direct x 9.1 and have run dxdiag with both cards and pass all the tests. Can not get any games to work. Any advice would be great!

MB - Asus a7v600
Vid card 1 - Jaton Geforce Ti4200 4x 128mb
Vid card 2 - Asus Radeon 9600 SE 128mb
Processor - AMD 2500+
Sound card 1 - Onboard sound on A7v600
Sound card 2 - Soundblaster Live Value (tried both)
Memory - 512mb pc 2700
Power supply - 550W

If you have any suggestions or need more info on my system, feel free to email me at zeltamar@hotmail.com

Thanks,
Casey

The problem may lies with you RAM.
See if you can swap it with a different stick.

It may be defective or corrupt.

Or run the memtest86.
It has to pass with zero errors.

what is the brand name of your RAM?

Can you exchange it for a reliable make like Mushkin or Kingston, OCZ or Crucial?

It doesn't look like an issue with the MoBo, CPU or XP.
Your Video Cards & Sound Cards are up to the tasks.

But since you mentioned that you've just replaced the MoBo, CPU & RAM, besides testing the RAM here are a couple more thigs to check:

* Is the Heat Sink attached securely and with the right compound?

* Try removing the side of the case and blow a fan into the CPU area. 3D games are CPU intensive and can generate a lot of heat. So unless your cooling system is tip-top you may have a heat issue.

* Did you over-clock the CPU? If so undo it and see.

Perhaps download this Motherboard Monitor utility and see if it detects any problems:

Similar to another posting. Compare notes in that other forum.

In short, you need to talk to the supplier of the machine and ask them what parts to send back.
