3Com Switch 4200 28-Port

by jmsantos1966 / March 5, 2009 12:40 AM PST

Does this switch support IP Phones? I believe only PoE switches do. I ask because a vendor sold one of my customer a bunch of these switches and told her that they do support VoIP.

Please advise.

While I know that such a switch switches TCPIP packets so your old internet VOIP is fine there are VOIP telephones that require other hardware.

Until you detail out what differs from your VOIP phones and just internetIP packets I'm going with "Yes, it works."

I come from the Cisco world where the switches need to be PoE to support IP Phones. Isn't that the case with 3Como routers?

We can fix PoE with those little boxes that add PoE where there is none.

Sorry I missed that. You're right. That's where your common switch won't do. But easy to fix.

Examples at http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=add+poe+to+network

So, no to the switches had to be PoE. However it does make for a cleaner install if the switch had PoE.
