37in HDTV or EDTV

Sep 15, 2005 1:01PM PDT

I have been looking at getting a HDTV in the near future and never really thought about getting EDTV, why would I? However, after consulting with David Katzmaier he suggested that I go with an EDTV plasma (if I go the plasma route). Reason being is that, as most of you know, any plasma under 50-inches does not technicially produce HD resolution. There was one caveat in the EDTV route, that I not be sitting closer than 5 or 6 feet. Here in lies the problem. Most the time I will be sitting at about 6 to 6.5 feet. So I was just wondering what some opinions might be. Should I go with the Panasonic TH-37PD50U (EDTV plasma) or the TH-37PX50U (HDTV plasma)? The price difference is not very in EDTV vs. HDTV is not an issue. I have also given LCD (flat panel) some consideration, however I am leaning toward plasma. What do you think? Thanks for the advise.

Ahhh,,, EDTV is bacicaly DEAD!!!!!
Yes there are still some sitting on the shelves and a few are still made, but go to web sites and look at the the NEW models all most all are HDTVs.
So a quick review..
EDTV is 640x480 a 3x4 format, same as DVD.
HDTVs are 1024x768 also a 3x4 format, but some can do a good job with 19x9 format.
1280 x720 a 16x9 format.
1450x1080 a 16x9 format.
There are 18 some formats for HDTV, an overkilll!!!
But 1280x720p is the most common right now for plasma sets. John

I just bought a 3 ton kp-wv600 Sony 65" 3 tube rear projector It cost me $2500 and the picture is stunning, I dont have to buy $300 bulbs for it also If the tubes go bad mabey 12 years from now I can replace them for $600 Also dont make the mistake I made Use your h.d.m.i or d.v.i port for your hi-def tuner and d.v.d. player you will only have one digital port either h.d.m.i or d.v.i on your hi-def t.v. so get a Gifin d.v.i. switcher believe me you will be in hi-def heaven in closing for a movie theater experience get the biggest picture size, rite now I am thinking of upgrading to a Sony projector and 96" screen good luck stewart norrie
