Probably doesn't matter

The Xbox 360 has been out longer, but it's game library is still pitifully small. It's cheaper than the PS3, though not by any terribly significant margin when you consider they're both several hundred dollars.

I think most of the big name publishers have been holding off making new games until the PS3 and Wii were released. Now that they have, and are also now on sale in most of Europe, you'll probably start to see more games coming out.

Once they do, the PS3 and 360 games will likely look nearly identical if you're using HDMI or component cables. Most sports games will be put out by big name companies like Electronic Arts, who will make them for both the PS3 and 360. In order to reduce development costs, they'll try and keep things as similar as possible on each platform.

If you already have a lot of games for the Xbox I'd get the 360, and if you have a lot of PS2 games, I'd get a PS3, just for the backwards compatibility. If you have a lot of both, or neither, then flip a coin or something because the two are basically the same as far as you're concerned. I will say that the more expensive PS3 model has built in wifi, but the Premium and Elite 360 packages will come with wireless controllers. Maybe that will help tip the scales for you.

XBox 360
Apr 12, 2007 3:40AM PDT

I'd recommend the XBox 360. I owned a PS2 long before I owned an XBox. I have a Wii and a 360, I still haven't gotten the PS3 and have yet to have a real reason to get one. I love the Wii and I like the 360. All 3 have poor game libraries. I think I'd have to go with the 360 because, save a few proprietary titles, I think it will be faster loading and have better online capatability.

Xbox 360 and a PS3!
Apr 13, 2007 1:34PM PDT

I recommend buying both, but start with an Xbox 360. Your first reply post was not accurate... There is a good library of Xbox 360 games already. There's certainly plenty to keep you busy for quite some time. This is not so yet with the PS3. You find that many PS3 owners are complaining because their consoles are getting dusty now that they've burned through the short list. I'm waiting until next Christmas season to reassess, but I think ultimately both consoles will have a few really good exclusive titles. It is correct though to assume that the vast majority of games will be largely available on both consoles and will be almost identical in terms of appearance quality, (i.e. graphics). I play my 360 on a 50" 720p/1080i Sony screen and it looks fantastic. I'm contemplating upgrading to the elite on April 29th for the HDMI cables and the larger HDD, (120GB). It will depend largely on how much the 120GB HDD costs by itself. Good luck!

No, it was correct

For a console that's about 1.5 years old, the Xbox 360 game library is pitifully small. By this point in the PS2's lifespan, it probably had 2-3X the number of games the 360 does.

Though I do tend to go more for quality, and even there the 360 disappoints. Well, disappoints me at least. I don't care how good a game looks, I care more about the gameplay elements. I'll take the jagged looking graphics of say Final Fantasy 7 or 8, with their excellent stories and gameplay, over some of the gorgeous looking, but completely unplayable, messes that have come out since.

Anyway, the point is, for a console that's about a year and a half old, the 360's game library is depressingly small, and full of copycat games. How many different WWII shooter games do you really need? Or Street Fighter style fighting games? The PS3 is only about a month old, so a small library is to be expected. Whether it too will remain depressingly small as time passes has yet to be seen. Of course the original poster expressed an interest in sports games, so it doesn't really matter what kinds of games we're interested in. Console sports games are the almost exclusive domain of EA, and EA has likely been waiting on the PS3's launch for most of its titles, so it can release them on both systems at the same time.

One Month...
Apr 14, 2007 9:51AM PDT

OK. I don't understand the previous post. You say one month. The PS3 console has been out since November. That is five months to me. The 360 was a year before it.

To the original poster. I have a 360 and a Wii. I also purchased the HD-DVD Drive for the 360. I have considered purchasing the PS3 for a while but can't seem to get modivated to do so. It just doesn't offer anything that my current game systems already do as good or better.

If I were looking to buy right now, this is how I would look at it. You have to ask yourself a few questions. First, do you want movies? It seemed that your post indicated that you didn't care. The next thing you mentioned is sports games. The 360 has far more games. This will increase over time. I don't think that you have to worry about sports games being released on either console exclusively. This seems to typically be reserved for Shooter and Car games.

As far as cost, your options for Apples to Apples is a 60 GB PS3 or the 120 GB XBOX 360 Elite, which is the only XBOX 360 with HDMI for your simple true 1080p like the PS3 and it will be out on April 29th. The PS3 is $600 and the XBOX 360 Elite is $470. The console and the games are both less expensive on the 360 plus the 360 has more people that you can play online with that is what you are looking for. The only thing about the 360 is that you have to pay $50 per year if you want to play online. You can still do online functions with the 360 such as downloading movies, tv shows, updates for your games, download trial games, etc..., but to play online with other gamers, you have to get the XBOX Live Gold Membership. The XBOX online service is five years old and has a huge fan base. I am not too sure about the PS3.

I hope that this helps.

360

Unless you want to play Resistance over and over, get a 360. It has GoW which looks and plays better than any shooter on the PS3 AND the 360's online interface and service blows Sony's out of the water.

But with that being said, get the 360 if you like shooters and sports games for the most part. Get a PS3 if you like RPGs/adventure games. Both have similar graphics (with the 360 currently looking better).

Also consider that past Sony exclusives like GTA and Devil May Cry are going to be on the 360 now. And the Konami brass want to make MGS4 for the 360 too because they see that there just isn't a huge PS3 user base yet.

PS3

It will have better graphics than the 360 once the 2nd gen games come out like Heavenly Sword, Stranglehold, Final FantasyXIII, MGS4, Warhawk, SPIDERMAN-3!!, Darkness, Gran Turismo HD, Assasin's Creed.....

Look at the GAMES
Apr 23, 2007 9:03AM PDT

I based my decision on the games available NOW AND IN THE FUTURE and i settled with a PS3. I love HD movies and it comes with a Blu-Ray player and Blu-Ray is selling better than HDDVD 3:1 right now, so it looks as though Blu-Ray is going to win. Blu-Ray also has more industry support.

If you're into HD Movies which you WILL since you have an HDTV. I'd say go with the PS3. If you buy the 360 and buy the optional HDDVD player it will cost you way more than the PS3 and HDDVD isn't doing so well at the moment.

But base it on the games. Not just the ones out right now but the future games as well
