360 elite

Apr 18, 2007 1:12AM PDT

I think I have decided on the 360. As stated I have a 1080p Sharp lcd. Should I wait for the elite or go with the pro. I know the elite has hdmi and larger hd. I don't care about the hd. I think my tv does do 1080 thru component. Any comments?

Depends on your needs

Go for the Elite: Since you don't care about the 120 hdd and care about the HDMI, You should choose the Elite if you care about getting 1080p for movies, so if you plan on buying HD-DVD movies and buying the external HD-DVD drive for the Xbox 360, then the elite is the way to go. Also, since the elite has an HDMI output, you can also upscale DVDs from the standard 480p so that it runs at 1080p(though it can't beat an HD-DVD source at 1080p, it'll just make the DVD look better)

Go for the Pro: If you are going to use your 360 more for gaming, you can run 1080p through components. I have a Sharp 1080p (Model LC-32GP1U) and it runs the 360 in 1080p through components

Conclusion: Get the Pro if games matter to you, Get the Elite if you want to use your 360 as both a game and a movie player.

Except

Microsoft is working on a component to HDMI adapter for the Core and Pro packages. You could probably get such a device from loads of other places already if you wanted.

The question then becomes, will Microsoft's adapter somehow make the 360 think it's using a DRM encumbered connection for the full resolution output, or will it still be restricted from playback at maximum resolution.

reply to XxLiLaZnBo1pC5xX

you said the 360 elite is gonna upscale DVDS. is that the same as un-converting? MS hasn't reported on any up-conversion, or i just didn't see it anywhere. do you have a link or anything? thanks.

Reasons to get the elite

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/xbox360elite/default.htm
This link states: Elite Console
Xbox 360 Elite is equipped with a premium black finish and HDMI cable, and like all Xbox 360 systems, comes with three powerful core processors, full surround sound, and DVD playback with upscaling capabilities right out of the box.

So get the elite 1. if you care about upscaling your DVDs(just in case you are waiting for a clear winner in the format war between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray and wanting to view your movies in higher quality) which the PS3 does not do...yet..(http://www.engadget.com/2007/03/02/ps3-to-upscale-dvds-says-phil/) or 2. if you are a big supporter of HD-DVD and want full 1080p output from your movies. 3. You don't want the ICT(Image Constraint Token), which downconverts signals sent through analog connections(component cables) to downgrade the quality of your hd movies to slightly better than HD quality

Gotta link?

Can you link me to where you got that information because I'm quite positive that's impossible. You can't turn an analog signal into a digital signal without some kind of converter (which would be more of a box than a simple adapter and knowing MS it would cost an arm and a leg).

Component is digital

Component video signals can be either analog or digital, but are almost always digital. The difference is, HDMI has a bunch of DRM garbage built into it, and component video doesn't. HDMI also carries audio signals which component doesn't, so it's usually paired with the DRM free SPDIF or composite for audio.

component to HDMI/DVI will suck

Adapters, especially when going from analog to digital, almost always have poor results. Artifacts are introduced in the picture and there might be cropping problems. Also, you can't have any upconversion done over an analog to digital adapater.

I'll be happy with my component connection from my 360 for now.

It depends
Apr 19, 2007 6:22AM PDT

Since the HDD doesn't matter to you then it's all a matter of whether or not you want to drop an extra $80 on HDMI. From what I've heard from PS3 users HDMI doesn't make a big difference and some people have reported getting better color out of high quality component cables. HDMI will allow you to use 1080p but how big is your TV? Chances are if it's under 50" you're not gonna see a difference between 1080p and 720p (And even if it's above 50" you won't see a huge diff). So that just leaves upconversion, the HDMI port will allow for DVD upconversion up to 1080p but I think you have to have the stupid HD-DVD drive for this to work (not sure on that though).

No, according to the CNET review of the 360 Elite, it comes with the same over sized power supply.
