32Gb Ipod Touch will not connect to WPA wireless networks.

Nov 2, 2008 2:50AM PST

Just purchased a new 32Gb Ipod Touch with version 2.1.1 firmware. The device will not "join" a WPA protected network. Apple tech support acknowledges the issue and suggest that I reduce the security on my wireless to WEP and MAC filtering. That was a supervisor after I spoke to two techs who would not acknowledge the issue and blamed my router. (Dlink DIR-625) All other devices on my wireless work correctly. Asus notebook; Acer Netbook; Xbox 360 with wireless adapter; Wii ; HTC cell phone. Only the Touch will not connect. I have tested and the Touch will connect with either security shut off, or with WEP and MAC filtering (same thing as no security Cool.

Hmm
Nov 2, 2008 3:12AM PST

Im using WPA with my iPhone, quite similar device I'd expect the touch to work similarly. What type of WPA are you using? WPA2, WPA enterprise?
It might be a bug with the router and the touch, some slight quirk.

No it was confirmed by apple support supervisor.
Nov 2, 2008 5:21AM PST

There is an issue with the firmware 2.1.1 and the new release of the Ipod touch. The conflict will not allow this release of the touch hardware to "join" or connect with a wpa or wpa2 network. The issue is not specific to the model of router. I even asked if I could resolve it by purchasing an apple router and the support supervisor admitted that would not work. I'm working around it by adding another router just for my touch. It's a trendnet ($20.00) router and the ipod will not connect to it either when using WPA. However, with WEP the connection is flawless.

Router logs
Nov 2, 2008 5:24AM PST

The DLink router log shows
[INFO] Sat Nov 01 10:52:16 2008 Wireless system with MAC address (removed) disconnected for reason: Received Deauthentication. Haven't checked the trendnet log yet.

OK time for a retraction

I changed a setting on the Trendnet so that it is using AES and the Preshared Key and that is now working. I sent an audio clip of my conversation with Apple support to the buzz email.

Thats what I'm using

Also it might be an idea to wait for a touch software update rather than spending more money.

I guess that depends
Nov 2, 2008 8:28AM PST

If you sleep in a bed of money, $20 for a router is a small price to pay to get your $400 touch working properly. Otherwise you could wait the indeterminate length of time for Apple (or Dlink) to fix the issue. BTW I went down to the office, and the touch connected properly to our WPA wireless there. So I guess this is really a Dlink issue.

it does depends.

Apple is supposed to make thing that just work. This doesn't.

You can spend 20 bucks (and time) on a workaround, or just get something that works to begin with.

iPod Touch/ router connect[ion issue
Apr 5, 2010 11:13AM PDT

Same issue with my iPod Touch...I'm being "dismissed". Looking for some connectivity guidance...if I buy the Trendnet router do I need to also spring for another modem? My network is connected to Comcast(their modem)with my Dlink DIR-655 router. Wasn't sure if multiple routers can be connected to a single modem? Thanks.

Thanks for the info/link for connecting my router. Will give it a shot.

Here's an update.
Nov 9, 2008 1:14AM PST

I have been doing some specific testing to see when it will not connect. The ipod touch 32Gb with ver 2.1.1 firmware will not connect to a WPA2 secured network. (At least the one that I have. Your mileage may vary.)

unable to join
Nov 9, 2008 9:29AM PST

I also get the message when I try to connect to my wireless EVDO router in my car. It will eventually join, just take several attempts. Works fine at home. Both on WPA2. Good to know that the fix may come from Apple.

This is just rediculous
Nov 17, 2008 11:50AM PST

I can't even get my 2nd gen ipod touch (which came with 2.1.1) to connect to my router (D-link DSL-2740B) with NO security, WEP or WPA. It sees the network, with full bars, but simply states "Unable to join the network HODDONET" with a "Dismiss" button.

I've tried resetting and retyping passwords, looked everywhere, and I can't even think what to try next.

Somebody please help!

It may be a conflict between Dlink and Apple.
Nov 17, 2008 10:50PM PST

I ended up purchasing a Trendnet 802.11G router at Bestbuy for $20.00. I set the security up with WPA (Not WPA2) using AES encryption. These options were not available on the DLINK (DIR-625). Now my touch works fine. Complain to apple tech support about your wasted time and expense of buying another router. They sent me a free car charger/FM transmitter. Can't guarantee the same result for you. And you are right this is ridiculous

Try setting your router to 802.11G only
Nov 17, 2008 10:53PM PST

I haven't tried it yet. But I just looked up your router and it is also a DLINK 802.11N enabled router. Not sure, but maybe it will work in 802.11G only mode.

Tried it, tried it all.
Nov 21, 2008 9:16PM PST

I've downloaded the latest firmware (2.2). Still no luck.

I've tried setting it at 802.11g, b, n, and any combination. I've tried WPA. I've tried zero security! Same pop-up every time. "Unable to join the network ***". Lame.

Apple must simply hate D-Link. It works fine on my friend's Belkin router!

Anybody got any other ideas?

How much do you like your ipod.
Nov 22, 2008 4:51AM PST

If you don't want to return the ipod, and don't want to spend hours of wasted time talking to apple... I think you'll need to replace the router. It's a bad work around, but for $20-$30 you can probably save yourself a lot of time.

Ipod Touch will not connect to WPA network. Potential fix
Nov 21, 2008 5:19AM PST

Hello all.

I am not sure if this will help with the 2nd gen Touch but it works on my 8gb 1st Gen. I had the exact same problem with my Verizon MI24wr wireless router. The Touch would connect to a WEP enabled network no problem, once I switch on the WPA protection the Touch see's the network but would not let me connect. In doing research and trial and error I found that my router defaults the Beacon Interval to 100ms. Changing this value to 75ms solved my problem. Dial into your router using its IP address and go to your advanced Wireless settings, you should be able to modify your Beacon Interval to 75ms. Hope this helps.

This issue is resolved with the new firmware 2.2
Nov 21, 2008 10:28AM PST

Thanks for the suggestion. I have just installed firmware 2.2 from apple, and it has resolved the issue. With no changes to my network I can log into my DLINK router.

iPod touch worked only with WEP, now works on WPA
Dec 17, 2008 5:09AM PST

Fantastic!! I followed the suggestion from Death Hobbit and I can now connect to my home wireless network using WPA.
Previously, I could connect my iPod Touch 2nd generation only when my router had no security programmed or with WEP. By changing the Beacon Interval setting from 100ms to 75ms on my Linksys WRT54GS, my problem was fixed. I can now use WPA (better security than WEP)
Many thanks Death Hobbit!

Ipod touch 3rd generation and D-Link
Dec 16, 2009 6:19AM PST

Hi,
I've just tried to connect to a D-Link DAP-1160 AP using my ipod touch (3rd Generation) and although the ipod could see the wireless network, it could not connect when WPA was enabled. I also have a D-Link wireless router DIR 655 which the ipod could connect to with WPA enabled. I tried a few suggestions from the forum but what I found that fixed the problem was turning off WMM in the advanced wireless options. This is odd because on the DIR 655 it is enabled. Go figure....

Kev.

No WMM works for D-Link DAP-1160
Dec 17, 2009 12:02AM PST

Hi Kev, <sings> I just joined to say I love you Happy

I have the same AP (D-Link DAP-1160) and had just bought two iTouches for family members' Christmas presents. Faced with the choice of compromising the house WiFi security, by using WEP, or returning the two iPods, I was about to do the latter. I had tried all the suggestions in this thread, but hadn't seen yours until today.

It Works!

Thank you.
