32 and 64 bit Windows 7 Professional

Sep 2, 2010 3:07AM PDT

Hi

I have Windows 7 Professional. I have 32-bit programs which install in Program Files (x86). I can't open the Help files (pdf and hlp) for a 32-bit software program.

I have downloaded both Windows patches for Help files - 6.1-KB917607-x64.msu and -x86.msu. The x64.msu installs, looks for a pdf file but will only recognize and open a hlp file. Will not do it automatically - I have to 'Browse' to the file every time.

The x86.msu file will not install - Says "The update is not applicable to your computer". But I have a Program Files(x86). ???

I tried Open with = Recommended Program = Microsoft Help. Highlight - check always use the selected program - click OK. Opens for me at that hierarchy location. Does not open in the Help menu of the software program.

The software program has pdf and hlp help files. I can't get either one to associate with the Help menu of the software program.

I can open the pdf from Adobe on my desktop but it sure would be convenient to open the hlp file from the program. The two help files have different information.

Any advice?

Thanks,
Barbara

No software title.

But I also have Win 7 64 bit and an older 32 bit app. It can launch the PDF and viewer just fine. I wonder if this is an app issue? My old app is called VFDIDE just so I don't leave out that detail.

Has the author of this app offered any fix?

Help files problems

Hi,
He has come up with a solution that I can use yet. I recommended he make a note for his next update to fix it. I've placed shortcuts on my desktop to view his help files.
This is the first of my 32-bit programs that I have installed, so I need to work out the bugs as I do my re-installations. I don't want a bunch of shortcuts on my desktop.

Thanks for replying.

I can't tell if this is a reply about my post. Let me share that it's rare for this not to work because it's a 64 bit OS. It should be the same failure and story for 7 32 bit.
