Resolved Question

3 user accts all with user profile service fail

Jan 13, 2012 1:31PM PST

Hi all. I have a rebuilt HP, system model HP compaq dc5750 sm. form factor, with Vista business 64 bit, 1 80GB and 1 2TB HDD's and a 500GB external HDD that I took out of my slimline when the power died. AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core proc. 3800+ 2.)GHz, 4 GB ram standard cd-rom,ATI Radeon XPress 1150 and ATI Radeon Xpress secondary. This is only for quick specs.

Right now all 3 user accts have the same "user profile service service failed the logon" message. I've read everything I could find here and at Microsoft's support forum. First of all I tried booting in everyway possible from f8 and the only way I can logon in any way, shape or form is in safemode with command prompt. I used my 2nd admin acct. that I have set up to use for problems only. Great, fine. I'm finally on. I went to regedit and followed the path:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList and all of our user/profiles in the S-1-5 lines have bak at the end. In control panel I can only access the user acct. I logged on with (in safe mode) and it will not let me create a new user acct., which I could then use to log on as a working acct. and fix our "bad" accts. I also tried enabling the built in administrator account with command prompt and my pc hated that idea too. I also tried doing system restore in the safemode I was in,that's the only way I really can actually(duh to me). That didn't help either, and I can't use the recovery cd's I have because the installation program says I have to have a back up copy created. That's inaccessable at the moment. More info about that below.
2 of the user accts are admin and 1 is a standard. As I said above one of the administrator accts is supposed to be for problems only, as my son used to have a bad habit of not scanning his dl's for viruses or not remembering what the pc error message was! I hate when he says "I don't know".

From other things I've been reading about this horrid problem,I think I know why this happened. I think I can't boot from the HDD I'm talking about now because I copied our user files to the external HDD when I finally got around to setting it up . After awhile I wasn't able to boot from the internal HDD because of the above prob., so I've been booting from the external HDD. That's probably not a good thing? But now my external won't boot because of the BSOD, but that's for another post. I just want one of my drives working so my son can have his pc back. This is driving me nuts because I have 3HDDs and can't use any.
Help!! Thanks in advance.

Since Windows (all versions) can't boot from USB Hard Drives something seems off with this post. Was there something not told?

As to the PC issue, when it gets that bad I often have to slip is ONE NEW BLANK DRIVE to install the OS and the rest (virus and such protection) then copy the user's files back in.

Not USB HD

If I understand that your asking me about my external HD,it's a Nexstar that contains my old slimline HD. None of the 3 are USB's. The PC issue sound hopeful though, Thank you, I'll give it a shot! The worst that can happen is I lose my slimline data and most of it is on cd's anyway, I just want it as a backup. Some backup huh? lol

This is why I slip in another HDD.

Even a small one compared to today's standards. Then I can put the OS and such on, copy in some user files and when I feel like it I can clone it out to the now empty drive and then move the big drive into place.

However, external drives can be corrupt very quickly it seems. Just a minor power loss or a jiggle of the sata cable and you could see your issue.

Finally in my HD with the 3 failed user accts!
Jan 14, 2012 8:08AM PST

I'm on my own pc! Yea! It took me forever trying to get on with CP:net user administrator, but I'm finally there at least. I still can't create separate user accts, but right now I'm copying files to cds so when I go into regedit and delete the S-1-5 line user profile(s) I'll have my files if something goes really wrong. I'm starting with my 24yr son's first. hee hee.

I do have a question about the 2TB HD I have as my 2nd HD inside the pc. From some of the things I've read, it seems like Vista doesn't like files being copied to another HD, at least that's what some sites seemed to infer. So right now there is barely anything on there. What I'm wondering since I'd rather use that as my primary HD is if I should wipe it and then mirror the 80GB so I can boot up with that(2TB) and then just use the 80GB and 500GB (if I can fix it) as my backups? Any thoughts? The 2TB just has files on it right now.

Sorry. When you went 2TB all heck broke loose.

I can't tell if the machine didn't have the 2TB supported and could be why it's all wonky.

I've NEVER had any issue cloning ANY version of Windows as long as the clone lands on the same IDE or SATA connection.
