3 month old MacBook Trackpad issue!!! A BIG ONE!

May 4, 2010 5:50PM PDT

Hi!
I got this MacBook brand new about 3 months ago. It is the newer one with the trackpad that has no buttons (its basically one big button). Everything was running perfect for 3 months. I was playing W.O.W like I do almost everyday, when after about 3 hours I got "stuck" My mouse would not "click" on anything but if I moved my finger around my character would move. I tried to click out of W.O.W but it wouldn't let me click on anything! I restarded and when the desktop popped up I tried to click on an icon. The icon would acknowledge the first click but basically was acting as if I wanted to "click and drag" the icon instead of open it and it would not register the second click to "set the icon down". I tried this over and over again and finally plugged in a USB mouse. I did all of the system updates and changed the trackpad settings to the basics (no pinching zoom in, double finger scroll nonsense.) It works now if I tap instead of click (it will not register if I push down on/click the mouse only light taps.) But it still seems to be acting really erratic. I need to get this fixed but I did not buy the care plan (stupid me for having faith in a $1000 laptop). I know its nothing I did because the computer was on a flat, dry surface, and I wasn't doing anything out of the norm. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASEEEEE HELP ME!!!
Thanks!!!
Missy

Your best bet would be to

take it to the nearest Apple store and get them to look at it.

If you only purchased this 3 months ago then you still have 9 months left on the warranty.

Get Apple to check it out for you.

If you do not have an Apple store near you, call Apple and tell them what the problem is

I agree that you should take this to an Apple Store. They'll likely have to replace the whole trackpad assembly. A bit of a pain on the unibody versions, but that's the problem of the tech assigned to fix your system.

You can still buy the AppleCare plan at any time until the initial 1 year warranty expires. I'm sure they'll hit you up for it when you take it in. I tend to recommend it, but then again I repair systems for a living, so my view may be a bit skewed because people only bring me systems when they're broken.

Back to Apple and a big nod to extending that warranty. Laptops of all make and models are horrifically expensive to repair out of warranty. And these devices are not reliable no matter who makes them.

Trackpad may need a Grounding Strap
Jan 28, 2011 2:02AM PST

After owning my My 13" macbook pro for about 6 months, the trackpad started to malfunction. The cursor would stick, jump around erratically, move when I tried to click on something (causing me to open apps and windows I didn't want to) and open the running application menu that is typically opened when you click Command+Tab without me even touching the computer! It seemed possessed. I called Apple and they thought that it might be a swelling battery or that I might need to replace the trackpad. Since the battery is internal, I needed to bring it to a repair shop to have it diagnosed. As it turned out, the trackpad didn't have a "Grounding Strap" and that's what was causing the erratic behavior. It seems to be working much better now. I hope this helps other mac users who are having similar issues.
