I have such drives and they are used to get files off the media first before anything else is done. At the 16 to 18 years you are well beyond the time you can expect these to last so if it read you were lucky and the FIRST THING TO DO is copy the files out if they are important. Folk continue to forget backups and posts about can't read this or that are all too common.
What to try? Recuva. It's on the web, free and lots of tutorials.
I have a 3 1/2 disk reader that plugs into a USB port on a PC with Windows 10. I tried my first disk and it read it. The next three disks it said that the format was wrong. I went back to the first disk and it will not read it now, either. These disks all have pictures on them and they worked when new, in a computer that had a 3 1/2 inch drive and probably Windows 95. Files were made from 2000 to 2002.
