Question

2ND ROUTER BEST FOR LARGE HOUSE STEEL BEAMS?

Jul 21, 2016 10:22AM PDT

Hi,
My house is about 3080 feet and has steel beams so I get great wifi upstairs where the router is located but very poor (if any) wifi randomly downstairs. I've been told to get an extender (didn't really work) so I'm guessing I need to set up a 2nd router downstairs. Will this cause any problems or will it just be a hassle because we will have to switch routers if we go upstairs and vice versa? Thank you!

Answer
Since you have a good router, get the same make model

But configure it as a WAP.

I no longer write how since it's been done and done and done. Google "How to use a router as a WAP?"

As to switching routers on the client I never had that be an issue. I name my hotspots so I know which I connect to and then when the signal is lost, my laptop or phone connects to the new spot on its own.

Okay so is that basically setting it up as a repeater but with a stronger device? And I will do that, thank you so much for your response!

Sorry no.

It's setting it up as a WAP (Wireless Access Point.) Repeaters have a long list of issues and caveats so I never deploy a repeater.
