Question

2nd hard drive with iTunes

Aug 11, 2012 11:42PM PDT

I have a desktop (Hp Pavilion 743G - "Pentium 4") with an 80GB hard drive (with Windows XP) that includes iTunes. I have added 250GB hard drive (with a Windows XP Pro clean install). The 250Gb hard drive (C) is master and the 80GB (E) is slave. The computer boots up to the "C" drive. When click "my computer" to access the "E" drive, open "program files", and open iTunes, I get a message saying "uninstall iTunes & then reinstall iTunes and the file will not open. I goal is to delete all program files from the "E" hard drive (printer, etc,), install them on the "C" hard drive, and only have iTunes on the "E" hard drive. How can I accomplish this easily?

Doubtful.

Many apps will not fully install on drives other than C (or more correctly the drive that Windows is on).

And that doesn't address the problems folk have with the iTunes library on other drives. I strongly suggest the biggest drive for C.

You must install iTunes on the OS drive. You can store your music on the slave drive though. Move the iTunes Music folder to the slave drive. Then install iTunes on the new drive. In iTunes have it point to the slave drive music folder.

iTunes on 2nd hard drive (reply to Coryphaeus' "reply")
Aug 14, 2012 2:17AM PDT

"iTunes" is installed on the slave drive and always has been (originally, my desktop had only one hard drive, the 80GB running Windows XP which includes an iTunes installation that operated properly). I removed the 80GB hard drive from my PC, installed a 250 GB hard drive and installed Windows XP Pro on it. I then reinstalled the 80GB hard drive as the slave(E) drive and made the 250GB hard drive the master(C) drive. When I power on the computer, it automatically boots the "C"-drive(250GB) and desktop. I opened "my computer", then opened the "E"-drive(80GB), and opened "program files". When I then attempted to open the iTunes folder, it will not open and that's when I get the "uninstall iTunes -then install iTunes " message. The "E"-drive(80GB) does contain Windows XP. Are you saying "I still have to install iTunes on the "C"-drive(250GB master)"? Also, how do I make it point-to- the-"slave drive music folder" as you mentioned in your first reply? After completing your suggestions, I know the system will boot to the "C"-drive(250GB)master. Will I be able to open "my computer", open the "E-drive(80GB)slave", open "program files", and then open the iTunes folder and access my iTunes library? (I have a HP Pavilion 743g desktop - Pentium 4 - 2.4GHz - 1GB RAM)
