2nd Hard Drive or Mac Mini?

Feb 17, 2006 6:07AM PST

I have a Power Book 1.50 and an 80 gig HD. I was wondering if it would be advantageous to get a Mac Mini over just a HD. Yes I know that I could get a lot more memory for less and limited on MM memory. My question is what could I expect to gain getting another computer linked to my laptop? I am wireless, with DVI and 800 firewire.

You will gain nothing

by having another computer attached to your laptop.
If you are short of HD space, not memory, on your laptop then a large external Firewire drive would fit the bill nicely.
You could buy a huge HD for the price of the Mac Mini and monitor.
500GB HD for $300 and that's without even looking.
Depending on your needs, a 250GB drive in a firewire enclosure would keep you happy for a considerable time.

External H.D.

V. Camby, I purchased a 250 GB LaCie hard drive for $180 recently.
The Mac mini does not have anywhere that memory and the cheapest Mac mini is $499. I use one at work. It's ok. Not enough memory to say the least. Maybe poor is the better word here.
Pete was correct suggesting an external H.D.

Memory and Storage Space

The capacity of your Hard Drive has NOTHING to do with the amount of Memory that your machine has.

Memory = RAM. Hard Drive = Storage

The HD on the mac mini is smaller and slower than that of an external HD
