2GB Kingston SD card formatting issues

Mar 11, 2009 8:24AM PDT

I ran into a very peculiar situation where I was deleting files, and I had a lot of files to delete so I opted to just FORMAT the 2GB SD Card. I choose the quick format because I wanted a clean wipe out card.
So after it was finished, I tried copying a 701MB file and the 2gb SD card said I didn't have enough space. I checked Properties and on the free space available it said I had only 500MB and the rest of the space marked in blue was taking a big chunk of space. But when I would double click the drive letter, it showed as empty. So what happened, did I not format it correctly?
I worked around this issue by inserting the SD card into my CANON digital camera and formatted the rest of the occupied space, thus freeing my 2gb. But why did this occur?

also last question, is there any way of "reconnecting" a plug-n-play i.e a flash drive, without actually having to physically reconnect it? Say for example I eject the wrong flash driver letter, is there a shortcut or command to where I can connect it other than physical removing it and reconnecting?

Many thanks in advance for the help

I guess they don't format like a regular harddrive.

You try doing a full format and see what happen?

Quick format and normal format gave me same result

yup,I thought maybe it was the quick formatting that got me into this mess, but after trying the regular format, the result was still the same.

So I just used my Canon's format option and I formatted the SD card using the digital camera rather than the PC running Windows XP SP2

I think I'll give it a try.

Ok, after playing around a bit, my conclusion:

It is possible to do quick format like a harddrive. I try it on a flashdrive and a SD cartridge and they both do empty the space. What happen in your case is a puzzler..is all I can say.
