Man Pleads Guilty in Teen's Starvation

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A man pleaded guilty to third-degree murder Friday for starving his girlfriend's 18-year-old son, then sending the dying teen off to Florida to find his estranged father.

Paul Hoffman, 39, faces up to 20 years in prison. Sentencing was scheduled for April 2.

Weighing less than 65 pounds, Chester Miller knocked on a stranger's door in Milton, Fla., in September 2002 and begged for help. He died several days later of an infection caused by a ruptured stomach.

Hell is not nearly enough for this man!

And 10 months was certainly not enough for the mother to serve. I hope she does not have custody of the 2 other children.

Hi Rosalie;

Sad case indeed. Did not say in the article what kind of shape the boy was in when going to his Mothers to live. I would think an 18 yr. old would fight back. The boy must of had some kind of problem to allow it to happen. Anyway, Hoffman pleads guilty to "3rd degree murder"... I believe 1st degree would be exucution, 2nd degree - Life and 3rd. degree should be good for 40yrs at least.

Hi, George.

Nope 20 years is the max. Most jurisdictions don't have this crime, using instead "voluntary manslaughter."

Hi Dave;

Now I can see why "UP to 20 yrs in prison".. Around here I believe it would be manslaughter, 1 to 20... I did not recall hearing of a 3rd degree murder charge in our system around here.

Hard to fight back when you weight 65 pounds. No, it doesn't say when he came to live with his mom or if his mom had custody of him all along, which is most likely. The couple's oldest child was age 13 so Chester would have been less than 5 years old when the boyfriend came on the scene. No telling what kind of tortured life Chester lived for those 13-14 years.

I agree. Let his fast now begin.
