2 Operating Systems and 1 Antivirus Software.

Dec 7, 2008 1:23AM PST

Hello;

Due to the known compatibility issues of Windows vista with many programes, i decided to have a second Operating System - Windows Xp in one of other drives. Now i have got a registered version of MCafee Antivirus in the Vista Operating system. Vista is slow and i have promptly moves back to Xp as my default Oprating System. But i am unable to extend the Antivirus to this Operating System (Xp). Do help me in this regard.

Re: antivirus

Just install it in your XP just like you install any other program in XP. That is: boot into XP and put the McAfee CD in the drive. I don't know if it's autorun or if you have to run a program like setup.exe yourself, but you'll be able to find out if you do.

You don't tell anything about the license. It could very well be you have to buy a new license, if the old one covers only one install.

Of course, there's no need to use the same antivirus program (in your case McAfee) on both OS'es. You can choose any other you like, either payed (Norton, Norman, Panda, Kaspersky, Trend etc) or free (AVG, Avast, Avira). Totally your choice.

Thats fine for Vista. For XP, use Avast! Antivirus, it's free and does an excellent job, all you have to do is keep up with the license codes (also free) which you just ask for from the Avast! website and enter it.

Installing antivirus on both operating system
Feb 7, 2011 6:25AM PST

It's not possible to have a normal running computer with two different or same anti-viruses installed on both OS's. This is because 1 anti-virus locks all the drives of 1 PC, i.e both OS are guarded by one anti-virus, even though you aren't able to see your anti-virus on the other OS, your system is secure, when you scan it using the other OS where you installed your anti-virus.

That's a misleading answer.

The run-time component (which is commonly used) from the antivirus installed in OS 1 won't run when booting from OS 2.

All you can do this way is: boot into OS 1 and do a scan of all disks. That isn't an effective solution.
