2 iPhone households, be careful with iCloud

by sonyken / November 14, 2011 4:37 AM PST

The wife and I have both been using iPhones for a couple years now. I get a new model and pass my older model on to her. I don't always buy the latest model, it just depends. So I've been using the 3GS about a year and decided to go with the new 4S. Bought the 4S at and Apple store and then went to a nearby AT&T store to do the SIM card dance. All appearded good. I enabled iCloud on both phones, without fully understanding what could happen. The wife and I both use my iTunes account for our periodic purchases and it turns out that iCloud uses that same account info. The wife complained about all my extra contacts she had now that she was using my old 3GS. She began deleting all those contacts that she didn't recognize or want. Well turns out when she deleted them on her phone, they were also deleted on my new 4S phone!!! Since iCloud was turned on for both and since iClould uses the Itunes account info, it was working to keep the contacts list the same on all my devices. Just a word of caution. Either create a new iTunes account for each user or disable iClould on one of the devices (which is what I've done for now).

What happens when you set up different iTunes accounts?

I had the same problem except my daughter's phone got her entire music library deleted off her phone plus now she has all my contacts, etc. It's really annoying. I think I'll take her off iCloud for now, but if I were to set her up with a new iTunes account, would she still have access to our existing iTunes library? I'm not sure what is the best thing to do here. How can I restore her phone to before we added iCloud (and used my iTunes account)?

I noticed this same problem when my son asked me "What is Zappos?" five minutes after I downloaded the Zappos app. He uses my old iphone 3 and I think I'm going to have to set up a different account. I assume the apps will still be available if you enable the family itunes sharing feature. I hope so, I don't and won't buy another 50 games.

This is a simple case of not thinking ahead, and reading everything before jumping in. You will also find that if you have something like Exchange, or MSN email, your contact lists will also sync with them, and may add contacts you don't want to your phone. I set up my sister-in-law's MSN email account on my iPhone, and it quietly downloaded her contact list. BAD. It should, at least, ASK.
The ONLY things I use in the iCloud are the Find My iPhone, and PhotoStream. My wife's phone only has Find My iPhone enabled, so far, even though we have separate accounts in the cloud.
