General discussion

2 Firewalls

Jul 23, 2006 7:18AM PDT

I want to make sure that the last update to Zone Alarm doesn't cause problems so I don't want to uninstall my trial version of the Outpost Firewall as of yet. Can I have both firewalls installed if I shut down the Outpost Firewall and prevent it from loading at start up so I can check out the Zone Alarm Update?

Possibly...

You can try to install ZoneAlarm, but usually one will detect the other and refuse the installation until the existing firewall has been removed. Personally, I'd just uninstall the trial version of Outpost and install ZoneAlarm. If it doesn't work out, remove ZoneAlarm and reinstall the Outpost trial...it will continue where it left off.

I Tried
Jul 23, 2006 8:30AM PDT

Well, I uninstalled the Outpost Firewall before installing Zone Alarm but after installing Zone Alarm it takes forever for my computer to boot up and for my desktop icons and task bar icons to appear. I used my GoBack program to go back before I uninstalled Outpost Firewall and installed Zone Alarm. I have no idea why the latest Zone Alarm update causes this problem. It might be because I didn't uninstall Zone Alarm the complicated way they you were suppose to.

You can still use the older version...
Jul 23, 2006 8:56AM PDT

There have been a lot of complaints regarding version 6.5, so some have returned to using version 6.1. ZoneLabs, Cnet, and most others have updated their sites accordingly, but PC World is a little behind in that category...you can click here (*direct download*) to download ZoneAlarm Basic 6.1 from them.

Hope this helps,

Manual removal...

If you want, you can go through the manual removal process, clearing out the files and registry entries associated with ZoneAlarm. Once that's done you shouldn't have a problem installing ZoneAlarm (any version) again.

Too Difficult
Jul 23, 2006 10:05AM PDT

I didn't uninstall Zone Alarm correctly in the first place because the instructions are difficult. I'm not too comfortable doing that either because of my health problems. The Outpost firewall drives me crazy with all its popup messages. I may have to pay for a tech to get Zone Alarm to be installed correctly but I have to be sure that the fix all the problems first.
