Since it's DD-WRT and that's all over the map without a manual for your product I have to share the usual.
Client Isolation, Firewalls and that question that Windows asks when you connect to the hot spot. Here's a link about that last item.
Read around the "Turn on Network Discovery and File Sharing." at http://www.groovypost.com/howto/windows-8-file-history-network-location/
If you raised any firewall or block this, all the above can happen.

I have 3 computers connected to a network...
Router = Buffalo Air Station running latest version of DD-WRT
Comp1= Win7 64 Pro desktop, connected via LAN and all wireless disabled.
Comp2= new Toshiba laptop Win 8.1, connected wireless
Comp3= old Gateway M275 laptop, Linux Mint, connected wireless
Comp1 and comp3 use to work together great, could ping each other, and comp3 could access comp1's shared folders. (It's not working now but that's one reason why I bought a new laptop finally.)
Now, comp1 can not ping comp2 however, it can access comp2's shared folders and it can remote into comp2.
Comp2, however, CAN ping comp1 but it can't access the shared folders.
I tried to set up a Homegroup on comp1, but comp2 doesn't see it.
This is my first Windows 8 machine on my home network and I'm wondering if it's a firewall issue in windows 8. But if that's the case, why can I still access the shared folders from comp1 but I can't go the other way around.
When working with the Homegroup, it told me I had too many network connections which could be the cause of the problem. This has baffled me for years but has never caused an issue before. In Network and Sharing Center, I'm shown 2 network connection both using the same LAN. One is my home network and the other is unidentified. This, I think, is because I use virtual box a lot. Never really been sure, but since it's through the same LAN, I can't figure out how to disable it.
Any help would be appreciated. And yes, I've checked all subnet masks, default gateways, etc. I'm leery to disable the firewall on comp2 because I will be using it on public networks and such.
