1st Cell phone for an old guy

Jan 12, 2006 9:23PM PST

I am recently retired and am getting ready to do a lot of traveling both in the US and Europe. Never really had a cell phone.

I think will be using the phone once or twice a day (or perhaps less) for a two or three minute phone call - only when I am out of town.

I want a phone with excellent reception and the speaker phone feature. I want a company with a large nationwide network and I do not want an annual contract.

I'm thinking that Cingular would be the best network for me (because they use GSM technology) and that their Sony Z520 might do what I want (even though the phone has a ton of features that I'd never use).

I assume that I can buy any phone from Cingular and then marry that phone to the plan I want - even if the plan does not involve an annual contract?

I'd appreciate your comments and suggestions.

Thanks

JohnJ
