Resolved Question

1999 46" Sony TV screen stopped working properly

Oct 14, 2014 12:20AM PDT
Hello all!
We bought our home last year, the previous owners left this older 46" Sony rear projection TV behind.
It worked very well for almost a year and then all of a sudden the screen minimized to approx one 3rd its size to its upper left corner.
(I have of course provided pics)
MODEL # KP-46C65
we are wondering if there is a way to set set it.
There is no original manual left behind either.
I went online and found a manual but it really didn't help.

Thanks for any help !! WE might have to get rid of it..

The odd thing is
Oct 14, 2014 12:43AM PDT
https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&as_q=KP46C65 and the second link is a convergence repair kit.

The screen oddity sounds like it's that but why not try that since it's about 80 bucks.

I can't tell if you do your own work or know about the LETHAL voltages inside but I did such a repair on our 1995ish RPTV and eeked out two more years which saved me plenty as the flat screen prices fell.

But let's go with a TV Tech that does this repair.
Trip charge runs about 100.
Shop rate runs another 100 (or more)
Parts looks to be 100 or 200.

So that's 400. http://www.amazon.com/Best-Sellers-Electronics-Televisions/zgbs/electronics/172659 shows some sets for less than that.

Hello Bob-once again you give very good advice !!

I appreciate your comment and will check it all out.
If I am not able to correct it myself then maybe the money spend should go to a new TV for our Living room.
We have appreciated this older 1999 Sony but of course the image quality isnt comparable to today's technology.
(We do have HD flat screens in the other rooms)
I will update soon..thanks again Bob!!

Just wondering here,

Update and Finished

It turns out that it was a matter of specifically resetting the cable box function via the remote control.
My wife and I had come to a conclusion a week ago that there was something wrong with that particular 'Comcast/Xfinity' cable box connected to the older Sony TV.
So last night we decided to switch that box with our bedroom flat screen TV's cable box just to verify just what we had presumed.
Turned on the bedroom flat screen TV and , YES, the screen had the SAME issue as the Sony did.
The Sony TV connected to the bedroom's cable box went back to NORMAL--a FULL screen.
(WHEW-- no need to SPEND more money right now on a new flat screen)
So my wife had called Comcast to request a replacement box.
Apparently she spoke to a knowledgeable Comcast rep.
The Rep recommended that she do this:
press the remotes 'exit' button 3X fast and then punch in the numbers "1080"
and guess what--IT WORKED!
Thanks for the earlier advice given my friends.
