1997 jeep cherokee

I have owned this '97 jeep cherokee diesel for 13 years. It has always been a good car. It had to sit in the garage for 4 years because I was living abroad. Since i have returned and got it back on the road, it has begun to fishtail when the roads are wet. The tires are new all purpose, but I think that the shocks are old, could that be the reason why it is doing this??? I have been told by a mechanic here that this car always had the problem, but I am sure it was not like this in the beginning. I would appreciate any input. Thanks
