1720 Hardrive detects imminent failure

When I start my computer I get the message
1720 Hard drive detects imminent failure. Press f1 to boot or f10 for setup. I press f1 and it start and seems to run fine. Can anyone help me with this? Does this mean my hard drive is ready to die? I have a compaq Presario with ME

What's interesting is that many don't take action.

How long do you think it will be before my Hard drive goes. And How can I back up my hard drive?

It's much cheaper to change it and avoid data recovery charges. Many don't get this chance.

I leave you to go find S.M.A.R.T. reporting tools to look deeper into the issue. How old is the drive?

My neighbot gets about 2 years each. I think its their screensaver and main application. I see Defragmenting on the screen all the time.

When you say he gets about 2 years, is this because it is a compaq or windows me, I have an old computer that is probably 6 to 7 years old and my daughter is still using it. I would expect that most computers would last a lot longer. Thanks

It's my opinion that in their case it's the screen saver. It seems to always be running the defragmenter. Maybe if they just used the machine?

Anyhow, best of luck in replacing it before it fails.

I had my hard drive replaced and everything seems to be okay for now.

Thanks

That is the best outcome.

It's much less work than what we go through if it fails on you...
