General discussion

15m long, shielded, modem cable needed - please help

My ISP tell me I need a

I have a problem connecting to my ADSL, which I've discussed with my ISP tech support.....

My PC is about 40' away from the incoming phone socket that I have to use.

I connect my PC to the net via one large phone extension cable. At the PC end, I plug the ADSL modem, then into my PC.

I was advised that I would need to get a suitable size of "screened ADSL cable".

I think that a 15 metre cable would do it - BUT I CAN'T FIND ONE!

www.revealcable.co.uk

http://www.revealcable.co.uk/acatalog/ADSL.html

follow the link, it's the 4th product down on the catalogue (High specification ADSL broadband modem, RJ11 to RJ11 cable, 5M) - the AA2600 at 10m is the closest I've found.

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

The modem I'm using is a safecom USB ADSL Annex A (ADSL over pots)

Longest high speed RJ-11 cable I could find on this side of the pond (USA) is about 10m. Maybe someone knows of a longer cable and if it is advisable.

ALTERNATIVE:
You will want to place your computers behind a BROADBAND ROUTER for firewall and other protection regardless of how long a RJ-11 cable you use. In doing so, you can run a short RJ-11 cable from your wall jack to your ADSL modem, and then you can run up to 100m of network cable (cat5e or better) from the ADSL modem to the BROADBAND ROUTER. From the BROADBAND ROUTER, you can run up to 100m of network cable to your computers.

You could even forget about a nework cable between the BROADBAND ROUTER and your computer by making a wireless connection to your computer. This requires that your router be a WIRELESS BROADBAND ROUTER and that your computer have a WIRELESS NETWORK ADAPTER.

Internet ---- ADSL modem ---- broadband router ~-~-~ computers

KEY:
---- wired
~-~-~ wired or wireless

MY PREFERENCE:
Go with the wireless broadband router

I REALLY REALLY REALLY appreciate the care and the detailed reply you did for me! I've only just seen it (I'm new to this forum - thought I would get an email telling me if I'd had any replies _ umm... I didn't!)

I found a 20 metre RJ11 male to RJ11 male cable that works fine! And the shop I got it from was only 5 miles away from me!

And now I have another problem....I think....I don't know....

I was going to post another message, but was so impressed with the lenght and care of your reply, I think I'll post here, first....

My problem is this....

Now I have my ADSL working.... I'd now like to wirelessly connect my laptop to my PC....

apart from sharing files and resources.... I want to be able to connect to the internet through my PC...

I THINK I have enough hardware, but I don't know! I bought a book - Wireless Networks for Dummies - and it sort of suggests I DON'T!

Can you tell me if I do?

On my PC, I have a PRISM 802.11g Wireless Adapter (3890)

On my laptop, I have bought a Linksys 2.4Ghz Home Wireless-G PC card.

Is this sufficient hardware to enable me to share, as I said, files/resources and link my laptop wirelessly to the net through my PCs dsl connection?

I still have to set this up... but no point in even trying if this is not enough hardware! I don't really want to spend any more money...

The point is, your adsl modem doesn' t have

to be close to the computer.

Instead of looking for a 'screened ADSL cable' (RJ11), you need a Network Cable (RJ45) which have a limit of 30m (100ft)

And yes I agreed with "linkit'.. go wireless if you can... Place your Access Point in the middle of the room or somewhere closer to the area, where you (and your family) will use the computer.
