1394 pcmcia card (unknown brand, made in Taiwan0

Dell Inspiron,366Mhz, W 98SE.
I am able to copy pretty large files and folders rapidly to a firewire Smartdisk drive and the data arrive but when I want to retrieve data the system freezes with a somewhat large file eg. a jpg file.It also feezes when Norton Disk Doctor examines the drectory. The Smartdisk drive is working perfectly, having tested it on a Mac G4. The same files that give problems on the Laptop work perfectly OK on the Mac, with no freezing of the OS.
Have I got a dud card or is Windows 98SE not up to snuff.

The combo of hard disks on firewire in Windows (all versions) is resulting in far too many posts and here (first hand experience) lost data.

The situation is so dire that I'm writing that it doesn't work on PCs.

Try the USB 2.0 connection.

I tried Google and came to this site http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#98SE
which has a lot of upgrades, fixes etc., all for free.
This site directed me to the Microsoft page, and that page described the updated 1394 driver but had no download link for W 98SE, only W 2000. But this mdgx site has the download url right there! (you may need to download other fixes first, see the page). I downloaded and it did the trick. So far no more freezes! This is the download:http://support.microsoft.com/?id=284837
This is the file:282837usa8.exe
Check with finder that you have version 4.10.2228 of Ohci1394.sys driver in Windows folder.

Sadly, it doesn't help me.

Reports still keep occuring and it looks like a (Windows) misfire.
