1080i to 720p picture artifacts

Aug 28, 2005 2:20AM PDT

I have noticed when playing PS2 games in 1080i on my 720p tv there is a lot of smearing & jagged lines appearing.

IS this normal or am I imagining it?

I had a 1080i tv before & do not recall seeing this.

Also, my current 720p is failing so I am getting store credit next week. I saw a sony @ 768p. Now that means there will never be content in the tv's native resolution so I suppose I will always the issues? or do others think different?

Also I am worried about the refresh rate on a sony wega LCD RPTV.......should I be

Maybe I should keep my store credit till 1080p comes out but that will take forever

the sony lcd is what is known as a fixed pixel display or TV. So it has to convert all signals to a progressive scan picture at the 1280 X 720 resolution. So in other words the reason you see those artifacts is that it is having to convert the interlaced signal over to progressive and its kind of a lag time.

That can happen with LCD, DLP, LCoS, plasma.

I think the sony grand wega's are great tv's.

But if you want a 1080P tv I would def say go for it. I have already placed orders for the new 56" toshiba 1080P DLP and 62" Mitsubishi 1080P DLP.

Though if you like Sony you can already preorder their new 1080P SXRD LCoS tv which should be amazing. You will be able to get it by the end of sept but it should be well worth the wait. They will come in a 50 and 60" model but don't be surprised if you see a little bit of lag even with those tv's with an interlaced picture

hope that helps some.

Sony Wega's & gaming

I have a Grand Wega IV (KDF-55WF655) and experience no lag with games. If I don't get any lag playing HALO 2 on Xbox live, I really doubt you will have any issues with your PS2.

I have the samsung Pedestal DLP which is the same reolution as your TV, and i have the mini pS2 connected with component cables and play GT4 in 1080i.

There is a little noticable lag but not much for my tv. Every tv will react differently. Though it should not be as bad as you say it is.

Also I still say if you want to pay the extra the new sony SXRD LCoS will be a great tv with awesome detail. You will just have to wait about a month for the first shipments to hit the stores.
