Question

100 Mbit/s Internet plan, but speedtest shows about 30 Mbit

I have the internet setup using a Wifi router. I called Spectrum (formerly TWC), and they said that this is normal if I use a Wifi router. They said we can only get the maximum speed 100Mbit/s if we have the modem connected directly to a computer. Is this correct? Wouldn't it be a ripoff since 30 Mbit/s is only 1/3 of the advertising speed? I want to double check as I'm not sure if I can trust their answer. Please help to clarify it for me. Thank you so much.

The speed is the media speed and from you to TWC.

This does not mean you can get 100 Mbit/s to anywhere on the internet.

As this is a well done topic, I'll pause here.

wire is the fastest

look up your router specs and see what the max will be Happy did you test it by wire directly to the modem like they suggested?

a simple online search using "why is wire faster than wifi" will give you a good explanation.

Internet speed

Use the spectrum speed test.
Move your machine close to the modem/router.
Connect wired.
Run the test.
You should see a number that's close to the plan your paying for.

Connect wifi.
Run the test.
Don't be surprised if the number is 50% or less of wired.
