1 computer on network slows down internet access for other comps. when turned on.

by dmn12345 / April 8, 2004 11:47 AM PDT

I have a network of 3 computers using DSL and a router. 2 of the computers work fine, the internet connection is very fast. But when I turn on the third computer, it slows down the internet access to a crawl on all 3 computers. Also, he internet works very slowly on this particular computer whether the other two computers are on or not. Any suggestions for fixing this problem would be great! Thanks!

swap ports on router and see if problem stays on the same machine or is the router. If stays, then look at the NIC settings on that machine, could be it is set to 10BPS instead of 100BPS, which would be 10 times slower. If not that then I would suspect settings, viruses etc.

Dmn,

What is the operating system on each of the computers, specifically the "bad" one, and have you tried installing a different NIC on the offending machine?

In addition to the suggestions made previously, is it possible that it's hogging bandwidth because of some sort of spyware programs or some such thing? Just for grins, please click on the link below and run the free parasite removal tools that Bob Proffitt has listed there:

Hope this helps and let us know what you find.

I would suspect malware but one other (long shot) potential issue. Is the cable you are using for the "bad" computer CAT5. I have had some computers where someone used a phone cable with an RJ45. Does not work well with most networks and NICs.
